No he isn't. The studio ran out of money and 25/26 were just shit out. The real finally was released later in its proper form as the End of Evangelion movie.
I don't know why you would hate nge but nge gives the series a polished ("open") end.

It's a deconstruction of the mecha genre of anime, strongly influenced by the sense of mysticism that Abrahamic religion has in Japan. Not trying to be pretentious, I just think the context of it is interesting. A lot of people consider it one of the best animes, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
