Guns give smaller, weaker people the ability to deal with bullies. People who try to rob you are basically bullies. If you are civilized, you probably don’t know how to fight, and don’t want to fight. A bully (or bullies) comes along, tries to break into your house or otherwise assault you, because he feels you won’t fight back or otherwise can’t defend yourself against him. A gun flips the equation.
