When you draw, it's important to be able to translate 3D things into 2D. You seem to have that part down. However, it's also important to understand the 3D structure of what you're drawing instead of just replicating it from one angle (as counter-intuitive as that is).

Basically instead of drawing a single detailed portrait, try warming up with rougher, smaller gesture drawings from multiple angles. They'll look bad, but it helps you warm up and get a mental image of what you're drawing. That way, you have access to angles that aren't available in your reference, so you can make more interesting compositions.
