I adopted a 2 year old cat that got taken to the shelter from an abusive home. He used to scratch and bite if you ever touched him the wrong way, but you could tell he liked people still. When we went into the room he was in he plopped himself down right in the middle of everyone to chill, but you know, no touchy at that time. But now about a year and a half later I sneak up on him while he's asleep and motorboat his fluffy belly. He sleeps in my sister's bed with her almost every night and will spend literal hours sleeping in my lap while I'm on my computer. I'll hear him meowing outside my door and open it to see him standing out there with a toy because he wants to play.
