The R0 of SARS is around 3. According to a news study, the novel caronavirus has an R0 of 5.7. So, it's not even 2 times more infectious.

Let's compare R0 values of 2 and 3, shall we? 3 is clearly not even 2x as big as 2, right?

R0 measures how many new people are infected by each person. So, for the first virus, each person infects 2 others. 1 infects 2, 2 infect 4, 4 infect 8, 8 infect 16. After four rounds we have 16 patients and it keeps growing like that.

For the second virus we have 1 -> 3 -> 27 -> 81. That's 5 times as many infected after four rounds and the gap keeps getting wider.

The SARS virus is not asymptomatic nor is it dormant.

COVID-19 is... for up to 24 days, within the body (according to peer review). During that time, you and anyone else who might have it might feel nothing at all but be spreading it to (should you not be physically distancing) 10’s or possibly even hundreds of people. It doesn’t even show up in most SWAB or Blood tests at this dormant stage.

SARS was not like this. If you had it, you were immediately symptomatic.

That’s how they were able to isolate SARS and end it so quickly.

They cannot do this with COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-1 death rate was 9.5%. SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus) death rate is around 2-3.4%. So with the same number of SARS-CoV-1 infections we'd expect maybe 3-5x as many deaths, not 20 as you said.

We can't shut everything down for a year. All we do is hope that the virus dies and no one new gets it. At best, schools can stay closed until the fall.

Point is, we can’t support that level of health and medical infrastructure, let alone preparedness infrastructure.
