However, the argument for intellegent design explains the fuctions of the universe by its creator, rather than relying on scientific principles with asterisks attached.

Why are you persisting with this argument from science? As I noted, it's completely invalid. Atheism isn't based on science. Atheism is simply a lack of belief in one particular type of delusion. It's not a description of a belief system. It's a description of everyone else on the planet who doesn't believe in a very specific belief system, and thus includes every belief system that doesn't involve theism.
