There are ways to get the iCloud reset but you probably can’t do it yourself. Best bet is to go to a shady computer repair store that is “Apple certified” (load of BS there but I digress) and explain your situation and offer to split the profit with them, or just sell it outright. I had a nice techie remove the iCloud stuff from an iPad left behind by my mother after she passed away. The super legit stores will of course turn you away, so look for locally owned places. Software does exist for that kind of thing, just isn’t cheap or easy to find, or in some cases, legal.
Pretty much near impossible to do easily. The best source of info is sketchy Russian language boards. They've mastered emmc soldering and the like which means you can rebirth the phone kind of thing.
My recommendation is salvage the parts and sell those.

I occasionally wipe Android phones where the software is free and fairly easy. I'm sure you could pirate the Apple wiping software.

Afaik most apple iCloud registrations are by apple - to add another iCloud account you have to unlock it in their db. Most unlocks occur by Apple store manager override - which is tracked quite heavily, with some stores refusing and making you send an invoice to apple for the serial number for an unlock.

The simple answer is that it isn't possible.
The complicated answer (and not possible for you) is that you can do it if the phone is jailbroken (which you can only do on certain versions of iOS), by detouring the function calls which are relevant to identification of the phone. There is no public technique for this, and it requires a permanent jailbreak and a donor ID from another iPhone X.
It is not possible to do with eMMC soldering, the data is encrypted with a CPU unique key.

I used to work the genius bar for about 3 years.
We would only unlock if with proof of purchase and photo ID that matches the name on the icloud account that is attached to the device. We would then provide that info to the manager and the manager would do the unlock. It's a very quick process (takes like 1-2 mins), but only if you have the documentation I mentioned.

2) Even if you do get it unlocked, you still can't use it. The act of the icloud account locking the device blocked the IMEI and you can't change the IMEI. It's trash.
This will work, however make sure to transfer the home button as well. This is important for Touch ID capability.

OP, if you know the screen lock and it's not iCloud locked (I'd highly recommend you ensure the Sim is out and wifi disabled), you might be able to extract the password keybag by backing it up with iTunes and hopefully pulling a reused password out of that (or accessing their email, resetting their iTunes password and de-iclouding it). I've done this before, someone bought the phone but nobody knew the password.

Not true. IMEI lock is by carrier, sometimes the carrier's collaborate. If you report a phone stolen to the carrier it can be locked. Not iCloud, that just locks the S/N

As someone who deals with this constantly here are your options.
1. Get the previous owner to login to their iCloud account and remove the device from their account allowing it to be reset.
2. Show proof of purchase to apple and they will reset it for you.
3. Pay to have the activation lock removed.
4. Break into the guys iCloud account
There's a site based out of the UK that you can pay to have the activation lock removed. Its only like 20-30$
You need to hold down the home and power button till it restarts and shows the screen of the cable plugging into a computer (do this while it's plugged into a computer with an updated version of iTunes. Then you can update/restore the device. Most likely getting stuck at the activation screen. This also gives you what the iCloud account is in the form of something like B*****@gmail.com or b****@w****.com
If you can guess what the email is by either Google stalking the person or you can tell he used his work email and you know that, you can do an iCloud password reset online. It then asks you to verify the number (this is two factor authentication) and it gives you the hint of (***) ***-**23
It only gives you the last two numbers but you can also usually Google stalk that. If you have all that info you can sometimes trick someone into helping you. For instance if it's his previous work number and you found it, you can call the number and explain the situation to whoever has the number now for getting the reset code. Or you can try calling apple support and let them know you don't have access to the number anymore. If it's the current number of the phone and it's active still, that's another option..
This all being said, and you can't fix it, people will buy the device if you are upfront about it being on a activation lock. People can use it for parts. You can still get a good chunk of money..
