Half-true. "Money" is the sole reason why a solid chunk of this species even gets up in the morning. "Money" allows us to get "things" we need to live comfortably. So even with chaos, some would risk their life for money so they can continue to spend the money and feel comfort with the utilities it provides.

Money is the root of all evil, but then it's the root of anything we do, period. It's the sole purpose we have on this planet: work, get money, die. Remove the system so suddenly and people go nuts, they lose their purpose. This is why a lot of rich people end up mentally ill and unhappy: the struggle to obtain the money is gone, so they reach the endgame and have nothing to wake up in the mornings for no matter how many distractions they use. Some of course, live happy forever ignoring the entire world and enjoy their wealth.

But those are exceptions, not the norm. For the rest of the species, not working and not having money may as well mean they got shot in the head and killed, but they're just not physically dead yet.

In short, this is a small glimpse as to why being a conscious human being is nothing short of the most incredible fucking nightmare conceivable. Imagine being a human. You are born to be raised, to then work and get paper, and then get stuff with that paper and you die a bit afterwards when you get old. That's all your life is.

The point is that businesses shouldn't shut dowm because it fucks the economy. If the business doesn't shut down, everybody still has a job and therefore a source of income. It's like this: if we shut everything down because of COVID-19, there is a 100% chance our economy and society WILL suffer. No money flow = guaranteed stagnation and eventual breakdown. But if we keep businesses open, and allow people to work, there is always a chance we can power through. Even if there's still a 99% chance of that plan failing, 1% chance of success is infinitely better than 0%. At the current rate, pretty much everyone is going to get infected anyways. Even if the most extreme measures were taken right now, it's already too late to stop the virus from spreading to the rest of us. Staying at home and pretending that's going to fix everything is akin to hiding under your blanket when someone breaks into your house. All it does it make you feel better about the situation before it inevitably gets worse and fucks you over horrendously.

So are you saying that if there's a chance to get sick and still work, take that chance? Even if the chance of getting sick and ending up in the hospital where you rack up more medical bills, which even 1 visit to the emergency room for 1 hour cost $10k, take that chance?
The idea of continuing to work at risk, even if its as low as 1%, that's still a gamble on the individual. And ofcoarse one person getting sick won't affect the economy, but all it takes is one person to infect 100 others.
It could be a cashier at walmart, and everything they touch gets infected. Multiply that to 8 hours of exposing others, co-workers, the mother carrying infected food to their families. All it took was 1 person.
The situation wasn't ideal, but there is a risk. Maybe not all businesses should shut down, but most should. Do you really need to risk the people working in a tobacco store for instance.
Your scenario points out a worse case of 100% shutdown. That's basically marshal law. But 50%-70% shutdown should be more realistic.

Anyone who thinks the economy should die does not realize they won't get the healthcare they beg for.

This is still deaths on top of the flu, that have people in critical conditions who are taking up hospital space so that other people in critical conditions won't get treatment, and its still getting worse.

Look at germany after WW1 and WW2, the economy was fully devastated, much more then any temporary shutdown during corona would cause, and it got rebuild in less than 10 years and today germany is one of the wealthiest nations on the planet and has the 4th largest economy.

Shutting down the economy will neither loose us any technology nor workforce, both of which are the main driving force behind rebuilding the economy.
