Windows 7 upgrade? i recently got a gaming rig and i need to get a new operating system. Any suggestions for something thats basic af and doesn't fuck you too much in the ass when it comes to ads?
Windows 7 upgrade? i recently got a gaming rig and i need to get a new operating system...
Just get windows 10. If your win7 is 32bit you can't even make the most of your rig
is it even worth looking into linux?
>linux
>gaming
No.
>linux
>gaming
>proton
Is win 10 free
Not anymore
No, but jumping off the nearest bridge or laying on the closest railroad is.
Yes, it actually is. Try looking into Proton.
No reason to stop using Win7. 10 is botnet, Linux has no games. Everything still works with 7. Directx 12 is overrated.
Plenty of games run on Linux just fine. In fact, some even perform better on Linux.
Yes, if you don't bother having a small watermark and don't getting any updates you can use it for free.
As windows updates are often breaking, and the updater doesn't work 90% of the time, I would even consider this a feature
I have a Ryzen 7 2700 and RX Vega 56 running Mint 19.3. Everything works just fine on Steam.
Running an out of date windows version on a PC connected to the internet will turn your windows 10 faster into a botnet than the installation of windows 10 takes
Use Windows 7 you imbacil.
I'm glad that you enjoy all of your 10 games, but OP got a gaming rig and wants something more than that.
Clueless idiot.
Depends, many games work file with wine (or proton, which is just a glorified wine distribution), but remember, when using Linux you need to be at least somewhat tech savy, you also need to make sure that the hardware you bought has linux support (e.g. linux often has problems with very new mainboards and some NVidia graphics cards) and you need to be prepared that if something isn't working properly (which will be the case, especially on newly released hardware) that it might take days to fix something (until you decide to simply wait for the next kernel update and hope the problem goes away)
i'm sure pirate bay can fix this... r-right?
Yes.
More than 80% of Windblows games run on Linux kid.
windows 7 doesn't have any updates! i don't want to get botted up!
Definitely.
Linux Mint.
Yes win 10 is free if you are loading it in a capable pc and have a Windows 7 sticker with license number. I do it all the time. Just did it to days ago. Download Microsoft's win 10 tool. Forget exact name but Microsoft let's you download the tool to either upgrade in place or create a USB drive, it download the iso file to make a DVD to install with. It's been working for years even after they said it would stop.
>Windows 7 sticker with license number
i don't, i pirated my windows 7. i'll still look into it although
>Clueless idiot.
Yeah let's pretend outdated software with unpatched vulnerabilities isn't the main cause for malware infections... Waledac, Conficker, Wannacry or Petya to name the most well known ones. All of them used publicly known vulnerabilities to spread, which where actually fixed on up to date machines. Up to this day windows new XP computers get infected with Conficker.
You never want to skip updates.
You don't need updates. It's all garbage to make your pc gradually slower and make you think you need to buy more shit to make it fast again. If it's not that, it is more ways to gather data about you and sell it to the highest bidder. With windows 10 you can't even opt out any more.
Well, windows 10 pro costs $10 so it's not too expensive
All of those things spread because of user error. Stop being a dumbass user and this will never happen to you.
>All of those things spread because of user error
Wrong!
Waledac used drive by downloads. Conficker used the MS08-067 server service vulnerability, and Wannacry and Petya used the EternalBlue exploit developed by the NSA. All of these expoits were publicly known and fixed at the time the malware went viral.
Many malware developers even wait for security patches, to reverse engineer them and exploit these vulnerabilities on unpatched machines.
wtf where?
You just listed a bunch of user errors. Good job fucking idiot.
Defenetly not on the Microsoft homepage. Google for "Windows 10 pro OEM key" (oem is the version resellers use to put on machines to sell). On german amazon its around 15-20 bucks (and works, got my version from it)
Wrong again, all of them where 0 interaction vulnerabilities (except maybe the drive by download, you needed to visit a website for this, but just one misclick on a link and you are infected)
I have a masters degree in computer science with specialization in IT-Security, I know what I'm talking about
You can shove your degree up your ass shill, you are still so clueless about the reality.
Said the one who up until now was wrong with everything he said
Been running the same unpatched windows 7 since 2013, where the fuck are your vulnerabilities at?
Than you are running a botnet since 2013.
You know that most malware takes use of rootkits to not be detected? Malware that you as a user notice is either bad or ransomware. All this says is that you haven't been infected with bad malware or ransomware
Oh big and mighty security scientist, have you ever tried not downloading virus.exe?
Microsoft should pay users to install win10 on their systems. it's so fucking horrible. yet I'm forced to use it because hardware. I miss win7.
Do you even block ads? I bet you are one of those kiddos who thinks it is unethical.
Windows 7 was the best operating system. It’s a shame that you can’t really game on windows 7 anymore due to lack of driver support and integrated shit needed to play.
ngl that's pretty damn stupid.
op here, agreed. fucking retarded how microsoft got so greedy they decided to fuck over 80% of all companies on the planet who still run windows 7.
You can use your Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10. Home Basic and Home Premium for Home, Professional and Ultimate for Pro.
Viruses don’t just come into your computer unprovoked. If he isn’t going on shady websites and downloading suspicious cracks from torrent sites you gonna be ok
word. win7 is peak Microsoft OS. it's what they say; if it ain't broken don't "fix" it. sales people wanna sell new shit but know nothing about good ui and interaction.
there aren't that many trustworthy websites nowadays. the internet is a bloated mess. many programs have security issues due to failed programming. I see your point but a lot can happen in 7 years, hackers find new exploits all the time. don't think not being on suspicious sites and avoiding malicious files protects you much on an obsolete OS.
Lol if you think viruses are sent via .exe files you are even more stupid than I thought.
1. Drive by download: download and run a program without any user interaction. Even spreadable via xss, meaning you could have been infected while visiting a totally legit website such as twitter
2. Macro trojans: Word and Excel documents can have macro code in there that can download and install malware. Since 2012 or so office required the user to enable macros by hand when opening a document, but if you ever worked in a big company, every fucking document uses macros so you need to enable them anyways
2.b: SMTP spoofing, you can send emails from any sender address, meaning when you get an email from your boss with the title "Schedule changes for the meetings next week" and an excel document, which I know I might get send, and I know has macros, I need to open it. Sure I can fire up a VM for this, but who does this? Maybe you don't have a job and don't have to work with this stuff, but I have
3. Exploits, with an 2013 unpatched windows 7 you are vulnerable against eternal blue. If one device (Android phones are currently really prone to malware) has this exploit on it, it can install malware on you pc unnoticed just by beeing in the same network as you.
4. Hardware, especially USB stick. If you have anything that connects via USB, and you connect it with a data cable to your PC it can run malware on it. Often done with cheap chinese products such as adapters, keyboards, mouse, electric cigarets etc.
5. Downloading files from infected servers. My server gets attacked by 20 different botnets every second (looking through the firewall logs is pretty funny, what people try), if a server isn't properly secured, even trusted servers might propagate viruses. If a devs buildserver is infected you can even get infected by downloading games from steam
If you have Win7 get the license key via key finder (google it).
Get a Win10 iso and install with the Win7 key.
It did that about 2 weeks ago.
... Cont:
6. Library viruses. Currently this is very prevalent for android, people write libraries, and later patch malware into it, meaning totally legit apps you install that don't have any viruses migt get infected with a library update, which then in turn turns the app into a trojan on the next update
To just name the most common forms of infection
Sure I do, but thanks to XSS, homomorphic URL attacks and social engineering you don't need ads to get your driveby downloads
also, hackers know that win7 is extra vulnerable since MS stopped supporting it, and they know lots of people will keep using it. so they're gonna focus on finding security holes on those computers.
>asking Yas Forumstards for technical advice
you deserve everything you'll get, op
I don't understand how you just got a gaming pc and it did not come with win 10 on it. You must of just put it to gether keep in mind most newer mother bords and cpu's don't support win 7 any more you can try to lode it up in bio mode other but it will freeze up. It's olny thare mostly as a joke if you can make up a boot win 10 iso on a flashdrive on a other pc I'd do thing and install and than look in the pirating the latest version of it and a key cracker it's a real pain in the ass to build something and then get push into spending $150 for the OS I recently had that experience about 4 months ago any way good luck
I'm absolutely no fan of Windows, I use Linux for everything except gaming, but honestly, windows 10 is much better than windows 7. It looks better, has more shortcuts, better search
Just the removal of the system settings sucks
This is honestly the best opinion
windows 8.1 is still supported, or windows 10 LTSC
Is thare any kind of OS on the pc at all or dos it boot up to the bios ?
>better search
oh, yes
what a joy
>Not understanding how windows search works
If you don't register your programs as such, you need to use the "File Search" dialog to find files.
and you didn't on 7
it's a fucking .exe
I shouldn't have to tell my OS every .jpg is an image, and .txt a text file. That's a shit OS, with a shit search function. It should be able to find a
