Percent based tips make sense. Imagine you and your entire family went out to eat and ordered $800 of food. That’s a shit ton of work for the waiter, and leaving $5 is a slap in the face. Consider it in the same way a salesperson makes commission: if they don’t sell, they don’t make any commission, and therefore make no money.

When you don’t tip you are literally wasting that persons time and also their money. Waiters have to tip out bussers and food runners and sometimes the kitchen. So if you don’t tip at all or even above maybe AT LEAST 8% then that waiter just literally lose money serving you.

When I was working in a research lab as a student I had a friend that waited tables at a diner and he effectively made more than me because of tips. It was a hard job no doubt but I've never understood why people think servers don't make decent money.
