form the outside it seem to be this big complicated fandom with complicated game play that only a "true" fan would like.

I unintentionally eased myself into 40k by soaking up the Fantasy setting first. I didn't even like 40k at the time but it grew on me quite a bit. I just started by reading books that caught my interest and filling in the gaps with knowledge from the internet.
