Every guy I know, old or young, quit drinking when they had kids. Mine didn't.
He used to tell me that "the greatest injustice in his life" was that his wife turned his kids against him because of his drinking. Sounds kinda self pitying to me. Especially since she didn't actually do that, was subject to the same mood swings and abuse as me and my sister, and besides all that he was never around anyways. He never had any common interests. We never took vacations because there was never any money to do it. We never went out for dinner or socialized because he would always get wasted and embarass us all. He would start fights with family members. Parents of friends. He used to ask why we never wanted to go out, then he would get angry because we never wanted to. Of course we could never tell him the real reason why or else he would get even angrier for calling him out and about everyone down.
Think of all the money that he spent on booze which could have been spent on creating an investment portfolio for you, or on saving for tuition, or for literally fucking anything else at all in the entire world. 1/2

Addicts never respond well to people criticizing them, if you want him to recover from it be supportive and express how it affects you and the rest of the family. But guilting an addict only drives them further into addiction.

Also regardless of the intensity of your habit, you can still express concern for someone else's habit.
Like you could be a severe alcoholic, and still encourage someone to seek help with their heroin addiction, for instance.
