I just recently started playing drums. Regardless of who I talk with; Buddy Rich is a common name. Metal, Jazz, Rock, even extreme metal black/death drummers. They all agree this guy is a semi-god.
Now, don't get me wrong! I seen videos of this guy, and he is good! But what makes this so "insane"? I'm a beginner, but if I practiced this solo for a month, I'd bet the farm I'd fucking nail it!
Fast, clean and inventive. No way you could replicate anything he recorded in just a month of practice. You're either to musically inept to realize why he is great or this is some kind of strange bait that I fell for.
Joseph Diaz
If you recently started playing drums, you wouldn’t nail that solo after a month unless you were some epileptic patty-cake world champion who could move that fast. Now buddy isn’t my favourite drummer (not even close), but he was quick, very technically skilled, and demanded perfection. That’s why people like him and his solos
Camden Brown
Did you ever contemplate why drummers across all these genres praised Buddy? The man was a machine, just unreal.
I'll do you one better! You copy that solo in 2 years and I'll give you my savings. $237K.
Lucas Kelly
He's ok I guess
Camden Brooks
It would take you a long time more than likely to master time to the extent buddy had it down. Along with his technique and precision and speed. He was intensely fast, but didn’t sacrifice being precise at all
Eli Bennett
I can't tell if this is dishonest bait or your just an honest beginner.
You won't even be holding your sticks right in a month, child. But sure, try and match a solo done by a drumming legend in 31 days as a beginner, by the end of it I promise you'll have learned something
>I can't tell if this is dishonest bait or your just an honest beginner.
This...
Ayden Young
It's his speed, precision, and on the fly creativity. Even if you practiced and nailed his famous drum solo, that would not put you on the same level as him. I also guarantee you will not master all of the ghost notes and perfect timing he has and you should really really fucking tone your ego down if you just started and you're aiming at Buddy Rich. Take it as a challenge idc just cool it.
Liam Fisher
As a technical drummer he is remarkable especially for his time. But what God music did he make? I have learnt some important things from him though. Primarily that matched grip is the way to go. He always made fun of matched grip but his posture was terrible and he had awful and debilitating back problems.
Blake Russell
One time Buddy was playing in a club, man, banging so hard you couldn't hear. And I said to him "Look man, I don't need it." And he slapped me so hard I slept through the holidays.
Luke Richardson
>but if I practiced this solo for a month, I'd bet the farm I'd fucking nail it!
This is a big part of it. Another part of his legendary status is due to the fact that he brought the drums more into the forefront.
But the fact is, he doesn't hold a candle to the current top-tier drummers. Dave Weckl makes Buddy Rich look pretty small. Fun fact: I actually saw Dave Weckl play with the Buddy Rich big band back in the late 90s. It was pretty incredible
Ian Bailey
Fuck that. Buddy Rich is way better than Dave Weckl. Buddy would rip that solo off while Dave Weckl molar strokes his cock.
John Powell
I don't know how you can listen to their solos back to back and think Buddy Rich is better. It's practically objectively wrong.
Just because Rich is older and more legendary doesn't make him better.
Carter Moore
It's been a few years since I gave up my drum kit and haven't watched a Buddy Rich solo in a long ass time.
About half way through this video, I just burst out laughing at the thought of someone learning to do this in a month.
Kayden Sanders
this is funny cause it's true. did the same but towards the last minute.
Leo Barnes
Buddy was alpha as fuck. A supreme virtuoso, band leader, and based chad domineering bully. He was a black belt and could kick your ass. He was a better musician than everybody else, and he let you know it. There are recordings of him after performances totally balling out the other musicians for playing wrong notes, missing an entrance, dragging the tempo, you name it. Buddy straight up reams them new assholes - the fury in his voice is straight up frightening. He was a perfectionist and his bands were legendarily good. But the audiences came to hear these legendary bands because of him. The drummer. He was the star of the show. Drummers usually don't get to be the Front Man, so of course he gets special pedestal status. But, he also deserves it.
Yeah, I finished the last half, and I was sweating as much as Buddy was. Holy fuck I've forgotten how hard he goes. Time to get the practice pad back out. Thanks OP.
Ethan Gonzalez
What's a good Dave Weckl solo? I've never looked one up.
Oliver Clark
Did you manage to make it to the end of the solo video?
>YA LACKIN' THA STAMINA
Dominic Ward
He not only made anyone give a fuck about Jazz drumming but he developed most of the techniques that Weckl uses. He's miles ahead. Just cause he can play the techniques doesn't mean he can be as innovative.
Eli Robinson
There isn't one. It's just jazz guys jerking off.
Michael Garcia
thats like saying foo fighters are better than the beatles
Kayden Bell
Good job OP you can 1,000 different things. Now I want you to do the exact same thing 1,000 times.
Buddy Rich played rudiments in a flashy style. You don't know what you're talking about
It's not like that at all. It's more like saying Franz Liszt was a more skilled pianist than Bach.
Jacob Bennett
He was a fucking asshole, but at least you've got him beat there OP.
Xavier Cruz
Underrated
Lucas Perez
No. Foo Fighters is more accurate.
Aiden Rodriguez
He starts by ripping off John Bonham then rips off Elvin Jones and I'm not even five minutes in...
Logan Watson
He may not but I do. I'm a professional drummer who has played jazz drums professionally. You're an idiot if you think Dave Weckl is better than Buddy Rich. Dave Weckl got to learn from Buddy Rich you self-righteous fag.
Julian Young
best drummer? I'll give a hint
Large Oilrig
Daniel Lee
No. It's not. You're a dilettante and you should stop talking about things you don't understand.
Go ahead and break that down for me. Or are you just name-dropping as if that'll give you more credibility?
He learned from him and also surpassed him.
Btw I've been playing for about 25 years. Not like that really matters. I'm right regardless.
>comparing Weckl to Liszt The instrument Bach wrote on was very different from the instrument Liszt used. Liszt's music would probably not translate well to the early pianos of Bach's time. Not to mention the trap kit itself was still relatively new when Rich was playing.
Julian Jones
on the subject of drums, check out richard spaven on youtube. try 'toko'. not an all time great or anything but is sick.
Another drummer here. This solo it shit. "Hurr durr look at me how many times I can beat on the drum fast".
And to OP technically this is very, very hard and you wouldn't be able to replicate it in it if you did nothing else than work on it for the couple of years.
Carson Jackson
>The instrument Bach wrote on was very different from the instrument Liszt used Yes, this is part of the reason I thought the comparison was accurate.
Would Buddy Rich have been as technically proficient if he was Weckl's contemporary? Perhaps. But given the differences in equipment and the fact that Weckl benefitted from a more evolved state of drumming, Weckl ended up surpassing Buddy Rich in every way
Julian King
lol ok
Jack Gutierrez
you couldn't, post here when you can though, i'd love to see it
buddy was the best, at one point, but then neil peart came
peart could do everything buddy and john bonham could. no one can do what peart could
Joseph Diaz
FUCK
