If tipping were mandatory, the amount would be included in the total. It is actually, at some high end restaurants, therefore if you work at Applebee’s, your beef should be with the owner, not the patronage. I tend to tip an amount commensurate with the level of service I receive and anyone who feels entitled to a good tip probably isn’t doing a very good job and deserves every bit of whatever I decide to give. Deal with it, or get yourself a skill set that dictates the level of income you desire.

when sitting down to a meal you're not expected to tip on alcohol, and you never tip on any tax- a couple has one drink each before dinner, one each during, and one each after dinner, minus the tax, it's a $15 tip on $100 worth of food. This is fine.

No they shouldn't. There are plenty of jobs out there which simply aren't necessary and would just be eliminated if required to pay a living wage. Baggers at the grocery store or greeters at Walmart for example. Those jobs provide enough benefit to customers and the stores that they're worth $8/hr. But if required to pay those people a living wage, the stores would just eliminate those positions because they aren't essential.

It's okay for there to be jobs that are intended solely for retired people or high school kids to make a little money at, but not to support a family.

Yeah, it's fucking dumb. The quality of service is generally better at expensive restaurants, I will grant them that. But the service at a place that's $100/plate isn't 5x better than the service at a place that's $20/plate.
