This is going to take 18 months of rotating isolations and quarrantines to avoid the infection spikes that cause millions to die in weeks. Yes we will contain the spread with a 4 week lockdown... then it will just start up again. Repeat the cycle until we reach herd immunity or 75% of the global population have it... or get a vaccination. This has the potential to go on for years unless we bite the bullet and let it go with natural exponential spread where 3 billion people have it at once and millions die.

yea, but if you try to let it just burn itself out doctors and nurses will walk out and you have history's most embarrassing failure with a 1% death rate for a virus exploding into a 10+% death rate
not to mention all the other car accidents, broken bones, cancer, heart attacks etc that go untreated

I'm sorry, but looking at the numbers, I would prefer to go on with life as normal as possible, and if you get it, you get it. Two reasons for this. First, the economic and social cost of shutting everything down is too great, especially considering the fact that this virus is eventually going to get out there anyway.
Second reason is because the rates of serious complications from this just aren't igh enough for me to justify wrecking all of society indefinitely. If this was killing fuck tones of people, then i could see the emergency measures.... but not for this.
Keep in mind that 54 million people die every year. That's about 150,000 per day. Corona has killed under 12,000 in months. Corona thus far is a blip on the map of deaths. I just don't see how it is for some greater good to completely fuck society as a whole for this. The loss of jobs, security, relationships as a result of the lockdown are worldwide, catastrophic, and affect everyone.

What are you talking about?! I don't get where people like you are coming from. The "financial" disaster IS a humantarian disaster. Do you know what the cumulative effect of millions of people losing their job is? Millions of people are getting fucked hard by this virus without even getting it! Not to mention the relationships that this will destroy, and prevent from ever even happening. How do you not see that telilng society to not even interact with each other in person is a social disaster? Do you know how many people are already flooding psychological crisis lines because of this? The reaction to the virus is worse than the virus itself, I'm telling you. Some of you guys dont get this. If left to run its natural course there will be somewhere between 100 million to half a billion people die, out of 4 to 5 billion infections. The only reason it currently kills 1% is because they are getting treated. How the fuck do we give antibiotics or ventilators or any kind of care to billions of people at once?
Yes, quarter to half a billion people will die in about a month from now.
