Just watched Full Metal Jacket for first time and enjoyed the movie, but curious as to how realistic is portrayal of the drill sergeant in the movie? Dude straight up liver punched guys and choked them. Has that ever been "legal" in the USMC?
Just watched Full Metal Jacket for first time and enjoyed the movie...
yeah
GySgt. Ermey was a real drill instructor so it came natural to him. Boot for young men about to join the Vietnam was undoubtedly worse than any boot today. For good fucking reasons as well. The U.S. Army has never condoned physical abuse, and I wouldn't call it common either, but if you're a fuck-up and take nothing serious, you're gonna get whipped. Most likely by your mates as they'll get shit because of you. You get punished as a whole everytime. That part is very accurate.
I'm not sure how it was in the 60's but I know that drill sergeants can't hit anyone nowadays.
It was accurate for the time it was portraying. It would be a big deal if anything that blatant happened today.
In some militaries is very common for drill instructors that hit the recruits. My grandfather was in the army around 1950-1951 and he remembers that in various occassions the drill sargeant hitting recruits.
My Gunny choke slammed a dude who ran in to him when we were leaving the squad bay. It certainly still happens but the consequences are much more severe if stuff is reported.
Play Spec Ops: The Line
Great story
Dunno about all other branches but for Air Force they can't even touch you without asking for permission lmao
They actually ask 'Trainee, do I have a permission to touch you?'
you do realize it was an anti war movie?
either way,i doubt us military drill instructors are that bad.america's military is pussified
>Watched a movie,think it's real life.
Faggot
I'll bet you thought "a few good men" was real, asshole
>GySgt. Ermey was a real drill instructor
He was originally hired as a consultant on the film, then got cast because he was just so much better at doing it than teaching it.
It takes a lot to get hands by a DS today, but it's not all uncommon. A guy in my rtb got his nose moved slightly to the left with an 'unintentional' headbutt.
I don’t see how that’s relevant to what I said at all
the only memorable scenes in the whole entire movie is the first act with the drill instructor. No one cares about the rest of the movie or the message it was trying to make. Joker is the main character but noone even knows or remembered his characters name.
>choked them
technically,private pyle choked himself
It's not.
Why not hear the answer from the man himself: youtu.be/MjffzVCno84
I'm not even thirty and I remember vividly being warned that if you join the armed forces, odds are that you will be smacked. It wasn't until middle school at the earliest that that changed.
although, what i dont get is.at the end when private pyle shot the drill instructer and then himself.wouldnt a bullet of that caliber had gone straight through the wall
the us military lost its balls when bush left office and obama and orange man took over
God, that woman is trying to make him out like some asshole.
Indeed, the 1st 15mins or so is a classic piece of cinema.
Watch Generation Kill, it's a 7 episodes long series about the invasion of Iraq and it is the single best and most realistic portrayal of war out of all the movies/series about said topic. The acting is great, marines are based on real marines who were there, one of them even plays himself in the series and it is based on real shit. The command is a bit off, to make it more dramatic, I guess, but other than that, it is a great watch.
Ya everyone whos saying the military has lost its balls, etc. hasn't been there. There are tighter regulations on paper, but DIs find ways to make your life hell that don't technically violate the rules. Tell me, would you rather get a solid smack in the face and face full of frog voice and spit - or stand at parade rest for literal hours. If you don't know the answer I fucking do.
You should watch "The Boys from Company C" next. FMJ is a bit...exaggerated, but the one I named is much more realistic.
Then watch "Heartbreak Ridge" for funzies.
yeah basic used to be a lot more brutal than it is now. they also stopped using live rounds because retards like the guy who got his head blown off
I'll take the smack.
They still use live rounds, but they're just much more careful about making sure none of them are taken back to the barracks. That means being searched by the DI's by hand. It still happens though: when I was in Basic in 2008, one guy had a live round in his M16 all the way back in the barracks hours after we left the range. I flushed it and didn't tell anyone though, but two other privates saw and knew I did.
"full metal jacket" was basically a ripoff of a movie he had just done called "the boys in company b" or something. i haven't actually watched the other film but if you want to see more of HIM then watch it.
I couldn't hear you over my being right and all.
Truth, countless hours of sitting in a HMMWV in cookie baking temps is the most realistic interpretation I've seen thus far.
You're NOT RIGHT is my point.
Gunny was a 5head!
>sgt we got a serious complaint against you...
>sir, he choked himself, sir.
>i see. well... dismissed!

During Vietnam? Yes. Now it's weird because the kids keep crying and it doesn't feel right. They won't get into trouble for making you cry but it's wierd to see a grown man cry over a couple insults and having to do push-ups.
My source is a buddy in the military. Not personal experience. Anyone can confirm?
Lee Ermey was a Marine drill instructor. It was 100% accurate from what I have heard from older Marines. When I went to boot camp it was accurate up to the point that he is hitting recruits, that shit doesn't fly anymore.

No. Bullets tumble after they hit a thing and the place is made of brick and concrete... Well, maybe through but I doubt it and if it did it wouldn't be close to lethal after.
The barracks scene was unscripted.
You can fact check this if you like.
I’d say anything he did in the movie was 90% accurate.
Never been legal but has happened - probably many times.
I've stood at parade rest for hours. I'll take the smack.
The movie that made want to join the USMC ironically. Gunny for sure is exaggerated, but not by much tbh. Vietnam era it probably was dead on even.
First half of the movie is good. Once they leave bootcamp and arrive in Nam it sucks.
>Joker is the main character but noone even knows or remembered his characters name.
Was it Joker??
He was a real instructor in the Marine Corps. When Kubrick said he wanted realistic, Ermey said something along the lines of "thats the only way"
This. They came up with a lot worse shit after they weren't allowed to get physical. I would rather get bitch-slapped for fucking up than balance my bottom dog tag on the deck in a halfway up halfway down pushup position.
The beginning is great, but the whole movie is a classic. "Me so horny, baby. Me love you long time" is an iconic quote.
You must really hate life if you have so much negative energy built up in life you feel like you need to publicly humiliate and destroy a man's life who's living his best life trying to provide for his children. How dare you defame not only him but his late wife as well. You obviously need to go reevlauate your polygamous lifestyle because clearly you aren't getting fucked properly if you're getting your rocks off by trolling a stranger on Facebook. So he doesn't live in your liberal rainbow bubble boo fucking hoo get over it already. So he has conservative views and doesn't believe little boys should prance around in drag big fucking deal. I assure you there are more people who don't agree with your beliefs than people who do. He doesn't trash you for your 57 gender nonsense and drag you in the dirt because honestly he doesn't care so why should you? Is he breaking laws no is he committing hate crimes no so leave him the fuck alone and before you try and get all political realize there is a difference in a separatist and a supremacist. But I'd seriously watch how much more defamation you have towards him before you have a lawsuit on your hands. Oh he triggered your little liberal feelings go sit in your safe space and play with play doh until you're safe again. And stop trying to ruin a man's life especially when he's a single father because you're not only hurting him. But you're hurting to innocent little girls in the process. And you say us alt right are heartless... Have you literally seen the bullshit you have unleashed out of malice and vindictiveness come on as an American I feel more threatened by your kind then his. Grow the fuck up. Oh and you can try to drag him down but at the end of the day people who truly know him aren't going to let the hateful garage you're shitting out of your mouth affect their friendships. Get a life already.
>balance my bottom dog tag on the deck in a halfway up halfway down pushup position
yeah, just kick me in the face.
Tl;dr
Yep, thats how it was. It is probably less brutal than how it actually was honestly.
Well that sounds like how they set you up for the kick back in the day. Tag lays flat, or pops off the ground, wham.
Everybody who loves the movie should read the book it's based on: _The Short-Timers_
Legit freely available online; was on the author's old web site for years.
I left a tiny corner side of my bunk untucked with the coversheet once and got an elbow to my eye after 10 minutes of telling me what a slob I was. The DS acknowledged it tho..oh I'm so sorry. asked if it hurt? Or if I needed a medic? Sarcastically obviously. No one ever said yes to that.
what happens if you join up and are like "meh this isn't for me?" Can you just take a dishonorable discharge and get out?
He auditioned by recording himself screaming at people while they threw oranges at him, without skipping a beat. Dude was fucking metal.
Yes. It's all self inflicted torment.
I love this movie, I'm in the military now and they don't do that anymore, but they could back then. My father was a Vietnam guy and was guy punched because he didn't address the drill sergeant as "sergeant".
Lots of guys get themselves kicked out on purpose. It is as easy as smoking a joint on liberty or leave and coming back to your command and telling them. Guys used to say they were gay too but that doesn't work anymore. You wouldn't get a dishonorable for that, I think it is something like "administrative". If they think you are crazy it would be medical.
I live in SC and met a fellow drill instructor who knew Emery and said the movie a little embellished but accurate
Sarge was always kicking the shit out of Beetle Bailey
3rd marines, recon here.
Boot camp was like that and more. If you were an idiot you usually had to turn over rocks for hours or had to scrub an entire building floor with a very small brush.
True morans , or guys that talked back got punched and some really devilish work detail.
Try standing in a pit of mudwater in your underwear for 6 hours holding all your gear over your head.
Today I hear you can even get out of A lot of stuff just by whining. Millenials literally ruin everything.
Why didn't Sgt Carter ever stomp the shit out of Gomer Pyle? Why wasn't Pyle kicked out for being a faggot?

Fucking A. class.
His actual name is said twice and written once, so....
>true morans
Oh god my sides
Arent some of you missing the point to those scenes just a little bit?
The whole experience is behavioral conditioning.
I don't want to sound like a slogan but the whole point of the exercise is to instill through fear and pain a sort of unflinching discipline - do what you're told and do it now - no hesitation, no complaints - no matter how ridiculous YOU yourself may find it - like replacing a tree leaf that you just ran over a kilometer to get under orders over and over during training.
Also good way to ensure that you ensure your buddies dont fuck up - because youll share in the punishment.
Sharing shittty circumstances is also supposed to strengthen your unit cohesion - good ol bad bootcamp memories the only thing complete strangers who are supposed to work together 24/7 for months on end have in common sometimes.

R. Lee Ermey played a Drill Instructor with how he went through it; back in that day, DI's could smack you around
RIP legend.
