Italy didn't, and now their healthcare system is overloaded and people are dying every day, even for things unrelated to the virus, just because they can't get medical attention. Lord knows the US has done too little too late to try and contain this thing, it's only a matter of time before a lot of people have it and our healthcare system breaks under the weight.

Even in China's case, they took a long time to get serious about containment, and it spread to around 1% of their population, in terms of known cases. In Italy they are still below that, but they are still getting new cases from people who were infected before the lockdown but are just now showing symptoms.
To minimize the damage from this thing, you want to shut it down early. You want to "flatten the curve" of how fast it spreads, so there is not a huge spike that swamps your health care infrastructure -- when that happens the mortality rate goes WAY up.
The reason I'm worried is that too many countries are not being decisive and shutting the bastard down. I don;t want the heath care system to crash -- even if I don't get this virus, I might need the health care system for something else.
The good news is, soap and water actually kills the fucker (it is a lipid-encapsulated virus, and soap shreds lipids), so stringent handwashing and social distancing to keep from catching it when somebody coughs can stop the spread cold. There is economic cost to achieving that degree of "distancing," but we're going to have to pay that cost at some point -- better to do it before too many people are zerg-rushing the hospitals.

I'm not , but I suspect the US is on a path similar to Italy -- the first infected regions will get hammered, but this will lead to a lockdown that stops the spread at significant economic cost. Two-three weeks after the lock down, known new cases drop to a trickle, and we will start figuring out how to safely get the economy running again and people's lives back to something closer to normal.
Sometime next year one or more vaccines will come on line, maybe a bit sooner because the pressure to streamline the approval and testing phases is going to be extreme.

Actually about 90%. As far as I read about 20% develop severe symptoms and half of severe patients need hospitalisation. 25% of severe patients go critical, needing ventilators and maybe even external blood oxygenators (basically a substitute for lungs) to live. Half of critical patients die.
WIthout hospitals all critical patients and a lot of severe ones would die, so the detah rate would be at about 8%.

The measures China has taken to contain the virus would be considered unconstitutional in the United States. We're fucked here because the government can't do what's necessary to contain it and on top of that, our hospitals can't handle a pandemic load. China has a large buffer of beds for tragedies while the US can only handle the amount of sick people you'd expect at any given time. If it hits us like it hit China, it's going to be far worse for us than what we saw play out with them.
And that all fits under the assumption that everything China has told us has been true.
