I've done VMs a million times for old games and shit. Really the only thing you got to know is how much ram you want to allocate to the VM and that's completely up to you to decide.

They’re contained inside separate VM files on your hard drive. You can format the whole VM, delete the system files, put a bunch of 90s viruses on it, whatever...none of that has any effect on your main system. I don’t even know how one would go about ruining their hard drive with one. Even the virtual OS wouldn’t necessarily be ruined by these things because you could just revert to a previous saved state.
