Rough numbers 60 million people. Assume combo infection+mortality rates is 1 deaths in 600 this season. That's 100,000 deaths. If the season is 100 days long, that's an average of 1000 deaths per day, higher at the peak.

No. Socialized medicine is like China, where they build a new hospital in 10 days.
This is for profit medicine. Can't have spare beds and medical equipment, they cost money. Can't test everyone, that costs money. Can't have a pandemic response team, it costs money (and worse, it's an Obama initiative).
The US is already running out of respirators and masks in smaller hospitals. If we don't contain it soon, the US will be in the same position.
And even if we do contain it, we need an effective federal government to prepare for the next one. After SARS, MERS, Ebola, and Covid-19, does anyone really think this is the last or worst?

This isn't a plague that hit everywhere simultaneously. China got hit first, and they implemented martial law and severe curfew, quarantine, and travel restrictions. If you do that, you can lower transmission rates, but it takes something comparable to stop transmission. The Chinese let the situation get out of hand for too long, so their measures had to be extreme to work. They were and they did.

You have to take concerted measures. It's way easier to do at the start of an outbreak than after it's taken hold.

Not even vaguely similar. Containment is only possible when you can identify every case, quarantine them, and then track down and quarantine all their contacts. No Western country even tried, they allowed people to go out do whatever they wanted, and just issued some weak recommendations. When you have widespread community transmission, all you can do is try to delay it. That's what they're currently attempting with the procedures.

I live in southwestern Arkansas, in the US. We just had our first confirmed case this morning. This little retirement town is not prepared for this. The population is easily 80% over the age of 65. We're already out of supplies due to earlier panicked buying.

But for some reason their military have been on total lockdown for a month, and haven't even flown a plane in 24 days.

Italy has the highest number of elderly people in Europe.
Their social care for elderly is non-existant.
So there is a higher percentage of cross generational living.
i.e. the elderly mostly live with their families so more of them are exposed.

Most recover as long as the health system isn't overwhelmed. Even an 80yo has an 80% chance to recover in this case.
The concern is how fast will it spread. Some rural areas are already having their hospitals running out of beds and equipment.
If it spreads too far too quickly, the US will become like Italy, with doctors having to triage who lives and who dies.
And even if we get through covid-19, is anyone stupid enough to think this is the end? After SARS, MERS, H1N1, Ebola? We need a government intelligent enough to prepare now. Perhaps a Pandemic Response Team would be a good start.
