The mortality rate is going to keep dropping the higher the number of cases because initial projections were (purposefully) overblown and many countries (IT, US) focused testing on at-risk populations initially.

At most you need to protect the at-risk groups, let it spread so populations develop herd immunity, have more ability to research a vaccine, and handle it proportionally to the threat it poses rather than decimating economies and suspending human rights. its not all that fatal for everyone unless you are 60+ years old, then the death rate is higher, what makes it bad is when a person gets infected they can have it for 2 or 3 weeks without even knowing they have it yet (no symptoms) and still be able to infect others with it, so it is very highly contagious, and there is no vaccine for it yet, but they are working on a vaccine
