But when you have something like this, where the death rate is (depending on age) between .2 and 10 percent, but the hospitalization rate across the board is 5-10 percent, and its a new virus so everyone is going to get it eventually...
Well, if everyone gets sick at once those 5-10 percent are all gonna die. Because we don't have hospital beds. So we do social isolation to spread the cases out. Everyone still probably gets sick, but in smaller clusters that the health care system can handle.

I thought this at first. Honestly, according to the World Health Organisations own stats, fucking car accidents kill more people worldwide in a year than regular flu does.

Turns out the actual concern isn't that the virus is super deadly. It spreads really easily, most people won't get symptoms (i.e. they personally will be fine), but just enough people who get the virus are getting sick that if it spreads fast enough, hospitals will be totally overwhelmed, as is kind of already happening in Italy and elsewhere. In the meanwhile, it's not like all the usual accidents and illnesses that happen are going to to go away- so it's going to have an impact.

tl;dr if you're young and healthy you'll probably be fine personally unless you get sick or hurt from something else and can't get treatment 'cos hospitals are too busy, the measures are to help healthcare measures and the vulnerable. Up to you whether you want to carry on as normal or help folks out and self-isolate. You're already on Yas Forums so normal for you is probably indistinguishable from isolation...

It’s just preventative to keep it from spreading. Places with mass gatherings are where these things breed. It’s more for the benefit of the elderly and unhealthy, the ones that might actually get hurt by it, than everyone else.

Problem is people see this and hear the word pandemic and immediately assume that it means we’re all going to die (with a lot of help from the media and all the people online panic trolling).
