Most cases are mild. The problem with advancements in medical technology is that inevitably people live longer, which is especially taxing on social security and Medicare. Large amounts of land need to be allocated to growing crops, or keeping livestock. A lot of "large areas of land" that isn't used for this is almost uninhabitable. We do have a lot of resources, but that's because the vast majority of human beings don't get to use it. If you woke up tomorrow and the entirety of China, Africa, India, Pakistan etc. were living like we are in the West, you'd be in for a rude awakening. That "terrible organisation" in these countries is what keeps us comfortable.
