Because if we don't use up all the oil in the ground it will just build up until there will be an unstoppable natural disaster. Imagine a fire that burns for years and years black oil smoke in the air non stop for years. That's why. Oil is our friend if used correctly it will last and keep our world comfortable. Coal is the same way. If we don't use it we may find ourselves fighting never ending disasters from large deposits for years and years.

That being said we should be using 10000x more renewable energy in the USA than we currently are. I think we could go 100% renewable with the right system, as of right now though back ups are probably smart
