That's not how you do the numbers. End of season, multi-year influenza numbers compared to early outbreak numbers will always hide granular details. We use time vectored terminal infections of influenza and compare those to a similar time frame since the (publicly acknowledged) outbreak of COVID-19.

That 3500 times doesn't make it a super-bug by the way. It means that our treatment and management strategies aren't developed yet. Lots of outbreaks kill lots of people early on but just become another "flu" season once we learn how to manage the illness properly.

Vaccines work for the virus they are targeted at, but they don't work for entirely different viruses. Modern flu vaccines contain only part of the virus (thus you cannot get the flu) but that's enough to train the immune system to fight it.

But the flu virus is a very different virus than the "corona" virus. That's why the flu shot won't protect against it. It is more closely related to the common cold virus. If there was a vaccine for the common cold (and there isn't), that might provide some degree of protection.

Interesting enough children seem far more resistant to getting it. We aren't exactly sure why, but one possible explanation is kids getting colds more often. That could work in a way much like a vaccine does - except they're getting a complete/live virus - since it is similar enough and thus the means for your immune system to fight it may be similar enough too.

It may or may not work then to go ahead an get the common cold on purpose. At least that's fairly harmless in comparison. But I'm not so worried about it that I'm getting sick on purpose. If there was a vaccine already for it, I'd get it.

It won't be the same percentage each time. There are no dice rolled. Those are the weakest 4%. After they die and we get reinfected, there will be fewer weakened people left and thus the percentage that die will drop.

Honestly this might save us some money, and it may have large political consequences too - killing off older voters.
