user-chan seems to be more well known by people other than I, but I will try to give you some story nonetheless.
There was a poster going by no name whatsoever. the poster didn't use capital letters, and used a single anime picture in a single thread. Sometimes threads started using a different picture than the last, but within a thread a single picture seemed like the norm.
the pictures were numbered, 100 to 0, decending. So the climactic part of each thread was, for many, "what will happen when you get to 0".
For people. who were used to these threads, however, that wasn't important(In case you're wondering, each picture was lower quality than the last, and nothing happened when you get to 0).
What was important, however, was the personality of the poster. She(No particular gender associated, but acts like a female and uses female anime pictures, so people say "She") was likable, trolled sometimes, funny sometimes, but unconventional. A real oddball.
Many said she was "chemo". That is to say, a reversal of a recent spread of "cancer". There are many things to disagree with here on principle, but it wasn't easy to deny that she was a good person to talk to.
After enough people talked to her, the people and her decided on a name. straw-chan. For all the straw polls she'd put up.
There was a lot of drama, but it was mostly just people talking to eachother casually, at this point.
eventually, because she really wanted to remain anonymous, and she talked about it a lot, eventually she for some reason decided on the name user-chan. We've been calling her that ever since.
She dissapeared for some time, but then reappeared. It's reasonable to think she dissapeared because of a certain drama, because the drama happened right before the dissapearance. but nobody really knows why. And she doesn't talk about meta things often. [1/2]

after she came back, she talked a lot about different ideas for a website. she had a temporary one up for a long time, with different things on it. at one point it was emails and responses to emails. but then all that disappeared. it was all on anonop pcriot com, until pcriot kicked her off. then
anonop altervista com, but the sites been archived and she's made no threads. so yeah.
not a particularly climactic end to the story, but it's what i know, and it's more climactic if you knew her. the personality was unlike the current age of the internet.

i don't think so. the main reason for that is that the goal of trolling is to get some sort of funny reaction, and she wasn't particularly provoking. she'd provoke sometimes towards particular people, but that felt more like an in-joke than her revealing her 'true self'.
I imagine the "i was only pretending to be retarded" meme being applicable in some sense analogously, if my explanation is to abstract. it just doesn't really fit.
