Alright, let me lay it out for you. Your sense of empathy towards animals is a mere side effect of your mirror neurons overtly developed over time. The purpose of this was to increase the sociality of humans to provide an advantage to a harsh environment. You perceive the killing and pain of a pig or a cow to be wrong, because it is more closely related to a human than a fly would be. We are the only creatures on this earth that feel sorry for anything for that matter. They respond to the stimuli and experience sensation and love and all of that, but to say they feel pain is wrong.
There's no system built into the plant to experience pain with. There's no benefit. They don't run around with cuts and bruises and need to know that they shouldn't walk on a broken ankle/leg bone or else they'll die.
I'd say Insects feel pain, but definitely not plants. They probably experience the pre-cursor to pain.

The purpose of life is to propagate itself to the greatest extent, as determined by the very first archaebacteria that emerged from the primordial soup of early earth. We also have tried murdering each other in the past when resources are scarce, but this has proven to not be as successful as simply just working together.
