I used to think it was because these men were often more assertive types, but upon actually seeing examples of a few relationships like that, their abusive behaviour was obviously driven by insecurity and jealousy, and they'd take out their anger on her because they were averse to confrontation with other men.

You say that, but I'm a guy and right now one of my closest and only friends is a girl who has openly admitted to my face that she has been, in her own words, stringing me along and manipulating me by making me believe she likes me, because she enjoys the attention I give her.
