That was during a time of rapid advancement in PC hardware. PC version of Quake II was already blowing away stuff you'd see on consoles visually in 1997, but by 98, you had stuff like Unreal, Half-Life, and Thief. Also, PC version of NFS3, which blows away the PlayStation version even in software rendering, but looks almost like a generation ahead in DirectX/Glide.
