My fucking best friend keeps pushing me to watch Evangellion saying it's the best thing ever and that if I don't he will stop being my friend. What's up with this series, and is it as good as he makes it out to be or is it just overrated anime garbage?

it's not bad, but it's not as good as many people make it out to be either.
it's full of nonsense symbolism. don't try to make sense of it all, you'll just waste your time.

If he's your best friend, why not trust his opinion and watch that shit already.
Every single anime in existance is overrated garbage anyways, so does it really make a difference if other fags on Yas Forums tell you whether they think it's good or not before you even watch it?

It's pretty good, but not the best anime ever made or anything. But I think the real issue is your friend, if he's really threatening to stop being your friend just because you don't want to watch some anime, I think you need a new one.

>If he's your best friend, why not trust his opinion and watch that shit already.
Because I don't ever want to waste 10 hours to watch all of the episodes of an anime, yet he has been continually insisting for me to watch Evangellion for years, and sometimes we sort of fight over it.

you could just watch a couple of episodes and decide whether you like it yourself.
Your time isn't that valuable anyways if you're here on Yas Forums.

I did wath the first three episodes one year ago and found them boring as shit but that motherfucker won't shut up about it at how it gets better over time and that I shouldn't judge it based on the first episodes. How can I kindly tell him to fuck off and that I detest every anime?

well then it sounds like your "best friend" isn't exactly best friend material desu.
I have very different taste compared to my two best friends both in music and movies and it's not like I try to force them to watch the shit that I like. likewise my friends don't try to force me to watch shit they know I won't like.

Just tell him straight up that you don't like it and that you're not going to watch it, if he tells you he won't be your friend anymore over some weeb shit, he's not worth keeping as a friend anyways. You'd literally be better off spending your time some larper on discord.

The episodes are 20-23 minutes long user. You can binge the whole show in 2 days if you really wanted to.

Just watch the first 3 episodes, that's usually the standard to see whether or not you like it. An hour of your time for your friends sake isnt a big deal.

Now if you want some kino you should watch Shingeki no Kyojin (Attack on Titan) and then read the manga instead of waiting for the anime. One of my favorite mangas to date right now, it is a very dark depiction of war, ideologies, and propaganda.

It's a good show. It ruined my life.

Evangalion is one of those shows that changes a lot over time, these bubbly characters go through some incredibly dark development, along with the plot.

I already watched it 2 or 3 times during middle school/hs, I used to enjoy it a lot back then, but now that I'm more mature I legitimately have no idea what made me think it was good so many years ago. I tried rewatching it last year and it completely just felt like some teen drama for children and nothing more.

pretty much this. I watched it before I grew out of anime. Its fairly interesting but its also a bit pretentious

The reason its heralded for being one of the greats is probably because it's a lot more mature and cohesive than a lot of typical anime. If you've only ever watch shonen and slice of life bullshit evangalion is like a fucking masterpiece by comparison.

this is why you can't have conservative friends

I tell him I'd be willing to watch the movie but he keeps saying that I'd ruin the experience doing so and that only the anime is worth watching.

have you considered finding a new friend who isn't a faggot weeb?

It's good, give it a chance.

It's pretty cool, tho not nearly as good as evafags think
It's pretentius as shit and some characters are so badly written, it's laughable
At least it's easy to understand and the actual message is something important
But your friend is a retard. Don't watch it and make him as angry as possible

Watch Another. It's much better than Evangelion which is fucking overrated and gay.

>Watch Another. It's much better than Evangelion which is fucking overrated and gay.
Watch Another it's a good show, user. Evangelion is fucking gay and normalfags watch it.

>tfw i dont remember anything that happened in it except for some fights and some random ass plot points

It's good, but it's not amazing
Watch Gurren Lagann instead chief

btw this is a troll don't listen to him

Why don't you offer a point or an argument instead of dismissing me as a "troll", you fanboy stupid faggot?

- Evangelion is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi that characters with very different motives and personalities
- The plot is very interesting with some mystery elements
It has mecha fights
- The main character is not your usual shonen hero, so he's a bit realistic
- The two main female characters are interesting and cute, one is a tsundere, the other seems emotionless and not too talkative
- There's also this gay dude but whatever
- The psychological element is highly present
- It deals with philosophical ideas such as life, meaning, the self and the others

You truly can make sense of almost everything and find purpose and intent in nearly every scene if you look for it though. Not to say it's all incredibly "deep" or profound though it does dive deeper into some psychological things you don't see explored all that often or in the same manner that Eva did it. There are sometimes that it does kind of beat you over the head with its messages at themes but EoE is still "an experience" and incredibly well done on the artistic side of things. I'd say the best reason to watch Evangelion is just because it's pretty unique, there's nothing else really like it out there whereas a lot of TV shows/movies/anime are more formulaic and similar to each-other. Eva is just 1 of those series that's pretty top shelf stuff, creatively and artistically, and really does its own thing instead of doing what everyone was doing. I mean if you like anime at all and can appreciate artwork/animation, EoE is just great on a technical level - really professional and talented people were involved with making that movie and it was backed by basically an unlimited budget thanks to the success of the TV series

Well it does in fact change and get generally better over time.

I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it is good. It's got some extremely good parts, and some very boring parts. It's worth watching.
Also, watch End of Evangelion after you've been disappointed by the "ending" to the regular series. It's very satisfying.

I think it's pretty good but pushing it on someone is stupid and always makes the experience of something worse, anyhow if you didn't like the first three episodes I wouldn't bother with it

Yeah you definitely cant be forced to like anything, at the same time you kind of have to give things a fair chance before deciding that you hate it. I do know Eva isn't for everyone though, I like it for what it is but I can easily see why someone wouldn't be interested in it, especially if they don't watch or appreciate animation. Some people might not like Eva because they think the subject matter is jouvenille, for others it just might not click with them, others may straight up hate the messages it tries to deliver, but I appreciate the level of introspection it provides, even if some may call it childish or shallow. I don't say this to call the series deep, but there's popcorn entertainment, then entertainment that TRIES to make you use your head a bit instead of just being pure flashy. I think End of Evangelion is great at both those though, it's got a lot of style to it and it has substance, whether you appreciate that kind of substance is up to you though. Also I do say that the anime series looks really nice too, but EoE just has that movie budget behind it

It's been 10 years since I watched it. At its core it's a show about relationships between humans. Being entrusted with responsibilities you didn't ask for, worthiness, self-doubt, and isolation self-imposed or not. There's waifus, but they've all got personal issues because this isn't moeblob trash like what we've been getting for 15 years.

Another is really good.

it is pretty good, but it has some homoerotic stuff in one of the episodes before the finale.
your friend might he hitting on you

"Symbols" that aren't intended to signify anything don't count as symbolism. The christian stuff is there because it looks cool, mostly. That's not a flaw.

Sounds like this is an issue with undertones. It seems like you're an inconsiderate fuck with no desire to put an effort into enjoying things that your friends enjoy. You're selfish and lack empathy.

It's great. It touched my soul like no other media/book ever has.
Greatest of all time anime by far.

>he doesn't like evangelion

why is modern Yas Forums infested with so much normal-filth

Attached: 1585422023996.jpg (236x243, 13.38K)

Such are evafags
They never present any arguments

For it's era it was good. Much better out there though. Gundam Wing is better

lain is better

It's definitely worth watching. It's actually one of the very few animes that aren't trash

Looking at Eva as a mecha anime is dumb. It's better to look at as just an anime. If you want mecha stuff then of course you'll be like "MUH GUNDAMS"

Macross is so much better

It's a good show. It's absolutely essential to watch if you like anime.

Def worth watching user. Grab some drinks and enjoy the magic of this show

It's good and overrated
I got a lot of feels from it but I don't think I "got" it
Or maybe I did but I didn't like the conclusions it drew.

Lain is much better in my opinion too yes
It touches on some similar issues but goes the opposite route, instead of going balls deep into pain and intensity the series becomes more surreal and detached
Imo they're kind of diametrically opposed, both really good though

Double posting but I also agree with this user that gurren lagann is better too
It's a lot more optimistic

That wasn't true, the meaning isn't very deep but it's usually pertaining to rebirth. There's many times the creators have straight up lied about the content of evangelion

It's 100% worth watching. Many people get turned away from it. It's based on personality. But if you really connect with the show there is absolutely nothing like it on earth.
The art is really beautiful as well, it's such a shame traditional animation isn't done pretty much anywhere anymore. :/

>and that if I don't he will stop being my friend
No one has ever said this, and if they have they're children, and if you're children, that kid isn't your friend. I fell for the EVA meme too and then the final few episodes and the movie were just utter nonsense, I felt I had wasted my time. I can only come to the conclusion that this series is felated so much because it was Baby's First Anime.

Nice bait thread, faggot. Must have gotten kicked off Yas Forums or something eh?

It's a little overrated, but still really good. The depth doesn't lie in the religious imagery (which isn't really symbolic of anything, so it isn't symbolism), but rather in the characters, the way they interact with each other, and how they grow (or fail to grow) over time. The dumb, slutty, egotistical, desperate asshole in pic related is simultaneously worst and best girl. The first time I watched evangelion, I absolutely hated her, but after watching it a second time, I came to realize that I related to her a lot more than I'd care to admit to myself. Personally, I'd watch it. There's a commonly cited rule that says that one should watch the first three episodes of an anime before deciding if they want to drop it, but evangelion changes quite a bit pretty late in the show, so the three episode test probably wouldn't work for it.

Image didn't attach because clover is acting a little fucky today.

>if I don't he will stop being my friend
he's surely joking right? If not why the fuck would you be friends with some turbo sperg like that

Why'd you think it was nonsense? I'd call it incredibly incoherent but there is order and sense behind most scenes. I'd say the most nonsensical stuff is all the scifi jargan but that's there for the entire series and not just the final bits

slam a bottle of robitussin and watch EoE then you'll understand

Evangelion's an alright anime, it's super overrated. But I think the problem here is that you need to stop being a humongous bitch and your buddy needs to stop being a flaming weaboo faggot. You should both kill yourselves in my honest opinion.

i don't watch anime but i thoroughly enjoyed it
i find the relationships between characters pretty interesting
also some philosophical/theological references here and there if you're into that
could binge it in a day or two if you want

Attached: crash.jpg (640x360, 57.91K)

it's pretentious shit that the people who are buying into it have to constantly push onto everybody, like your friend, because otherwise people would just forget about it. The creators admitted on several occasions that there is no deep meaning behind anything in the show and they chose to do some things to make it feel deep and meaningful.

Why's it pretentious?

It's not bad, but it is very overrated

The movies spoil the series and wont make sense if you watch them first

>pretentious
>t. brainlet that can't comprehend a simple plot and simple symbolism.

are you mentally retarded?
read his fucking post again he said why you fuckingn sub 80iq fucknut

of its so simple sum it up for me in a paragraph

I think some of more outspoken fans of Eva can be pretentious but I really don't think the actual series is at all
