I believe the nation comes from the biology of the people and not the culture. The reason I "ritualize" my ancestors is because I hold them up as a sort of example of what people should be, in contrast with the modern world, and because their actions created a better world for their descendants. (Well, most of them did. I couple of them messed up, and that's how we got to now)

I want to agree with you, but in my own anecdotal experience I've found that some of the smartest people are some of the most conformist.
For example: It's undeniable, even for me, that the NSDAP used conformity and crowd think as political tools. But it's also undeniable that the reason the NSDAP was so effective in ruling Germany was because they knew how to hire smart people, notably in the realms of economics, science, and military. And yet those same smart people, who in 1936 sworn themselves to the NSDAP, would later become "reformed".
I don't believe for a second that these smart people just so happened to reanalyze the philosophical tenets of the National Socialist ideology when the allies took over Germany. I think they did so under pressure to conform, showing that even smart people can be vulnerable to mindlessly following the herd.
