The flu is serious business. That's why you get a fucking vaccine against the most dangerous as well as the predicted strains for the serious.
It kills 500k people worldwide after infecting hundreds of millions if not well into the billions.

In a first world country, say, the United States, the flu infects over 40 million people a year and has about a 0.005% fatality rate. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S are hospitalized every year for the flu.

Do you see the problem with leaving Covid-19 unchecked? Even with Germany's 0.06% fatality rate, if it spreads significantly and causes serious health complications, hospitals would be over flooded and people wouldn't be able to get medical attention.

It doesn't matter that 70% are asymptomatic/quasi-asymptomatic, that still leaves a 30% vulnerable population. The people don't control quarantine-- the government does. And the government never gives a fuck about its people more than money or face. If they're doing this, they've judged the potential loss against potential gains most likely, and quarantine was judged to be more beneficial in the long run.

I was thinking once you get a disease, you'd have immunity to it once you've recovered and your immune system is healthy. Then you're safe unless the virus has multiple strains that are different enough from each other (mutation) or enough time passes (2-3 years or so for the first SARS) that your immune system forgets.

I think the herd immunity path relies on a lot of assumptions. e.g, no reinfection, low fatality/serious complication rates, etc. But now that you've said it like that, it actually seems really reasonable. But I can't really say if the route of isolating the old and exposing the young would be completely better than quarantine in the long run.
