Taking preventative measures is a lot like having firebreaks in a forest to slow or halt the rate the fire spreads at (the fire being a metaphor for the virus here and the forest being everyone you've ever fucking met and everyone they met, ect). It might not completely stop the fire, but it sure the fuck keeps it from getting a lot worse until said fire can be contained and put out.
