They can just make infinite spin-offs though, I mean, one of the points of the story is that there are many realities and people just live those fantasy worlds as they want, the only main plot of this world is the Devourer trying to end the existence of the same but the heroes always stop him, with this premise at hand you can just create any story you could imagine as long you include the Devourer at the end.

Chrono Trigger managed to have a good time travel story that was pretty simple and avoided being convoluted for the most part. Pretty much every aspect of the game was simple and enjoyable. Chrono Cross on the other hand an enjoyable mess. I haven't played the game in over 15 years, but I couldn't begin to describe anything that happened in that game plotwise whereas Trigger I remember vividly despite probably not having played it in about the same amount of time. Cross is a beautiful game with a solid cast and setting, but in no way is it better than CT.
