Won't they expand the story with Automata lore? I haven't played Automata, I know I shoud but somehow the story doesn't seem that intriguing and people who loved the first NieR seem to agree the characters are pretty bland.

I don't know how you've gotten this impression.
The vast majority of people who've played the original agrees on the notion that it has a much better story and characters than Automata, but Automata trumps it in the gameplay department.

I've played the original and I don't agree with that. 9/10 times when people say this they're also simultaneously screeching about muh secondaries and shitting on Automata for the very same things the original is guilty of.
