Most overrated JRPG ever

>bad graphics even for its time
>music is decent at best
>pseudo-intellectual story
>bad localization
>2 dimensional characters
>dull combat system
>repetitive dungeon design
>atrocious boss fights

Square did the right thing by cutting the budget, in order to develop FF8. FF8 is shit too, but it's better than Fedoragears.

>>pseudo-intellectual story
Meaning?

You're lucky you didn't get to Disc 2

OP here.

I stopped at disc 2. The Deus fight was so bad, I quit, and watched the rest on JewTube.

lmao if you watched it on JewTube you might as well have continued playing for the same results

Seems that way. I've been hearing about how good it is for almost two decades and finally started it earlier this year. I took a break for a while after Fei got imprisoned because it had gotten pretty boring at that point. I got back to it when I was away from home and just had my laptop with me, so I continues and now I'm about to make my escape from the prison. I'm playing in Japanese, so at least I don't have to worry about the localization. From what I've seen and read of it, it's pretty rough (though a large amount of it was done by one guy, so it make sense).

OP, I'm waiting, unless you can't substantiate this and don't actually have a valid criticism of the story.

it's impossible to enjoy this game or the people who liked it are blinded by nostalagia
sure, there are some good moments (the tower of babel, etc) but the game is a slog from start to finish.

Is the dialogue in Japanese as bad as the English localization?

as a game yes, it is extremely dated. those platforming sections especially, or some of the incredibly long boss fights with dialogue in between which aren't skippable if you happen to lose, are very frustrating. some of the dungeons looked hideous and went on forever

but, the game does have an undeniable charm throughout. most ambitious plot maybe in vg history (arguably a little overambitious), awesome and memorable characters and villains, cool towns, nice ost

it took a while for me to get past the ugly 3d visuals and constant random encounters, but i'm definitely glad i stuck through it. felt like a true epic adventure

>bad graphics even for its time
They weren't mind blowing like BoFIV (Then again what was)
But the 2D sprites over a 3D world was still done very well and with the level of quality you'd expect from a square game.
Bad graphics would be something like

>music is decent at best
Holy shit this is objectively wrong, it's peak Mitsuda yasunori

>2 dimensional characters
Who? The most of party characters got development on par with those of a game like FFVII.
And the villains were easily some of the best square had done.

>dull combat system
>repetitive dungeon design
>atrocious boss fights
I agree, except there were a couple of dungeons like the vertical one where you had to jump a lot that were interesting albeit frustrating.
And the final boss was pretty cool.

No. Characters feel like they have their own voices, and things sound more natural. There's the usual Japanese corniness in it of course, but it's not like what I've seen of the English version.

Eh, the music in Chrono Triggers & Cross were better. The village and Solaris theme got on my nerves fast.

Yeah, it's an overwritten mess of a story that doesn't work in a video game.

The story is absolute kino and the only reason to push through that game

still not as overrated as FF6

>make an rpg where you can pilot mecha
>as soon as you get in your mecha combat becomes less interesting

No way. The final dungeon is a slog. Totally the right move to quit before it.

Bro everyone makes fun of nobodies like Billy and Rico.

this is the real final fantasy 7, seethe more

the eternal xeno struggle

>Meaning?
It would take an entire college thesis to completely detail the awfulness of the writing, but here's perhaps the most damning example of Xenogears' atrocious writing:
lparchive.org/Xenogears-(by-The-Dark-Id)/Citan/

The link lists the exploits of a certain character, who the writers obviously intended to be seen as sympathetic and one of the protagonists. But because Xenogears' story structure is so ridiculously convoluted, with crazy revelations and shocking twists happening at every turn, examining the actions of that character for even a minute leaves one no choice but to conclude that said character is utterly despicable, because the writers had no qualms about twisting characters to faciliate their convoluted rollercoaster of a story. This is how the entirety of Xenogears' story is constructed: it's all style with no substance. All surface depth, appearing to be deep by name-dropping just about every philosophical and religious concept in existence, but exhibiting about as much understanding of those concepts as a 4-year old.

Another strike against the game is that half of it is missing. The second disc of the game is basically like having a friend tell you all about how amazing the game is while occasionally handing you the controller to fight some boss battles. That's is not an exaggeration, it's literally what the game does, with the characters sitting in chairs and recounting various events with the odd boss battle in between. I have no idea why people gave it a free pass while completely losing their shit over something like the Mass Effect 3 ending.

And the dialogue feels like it came straight out of a machine translation. Everyone speaks in very basic English that fails to give characters a distinct voice and presence. As a result, every interaction in the game just blurs together in a sea of generic expository dialogue.

Most of the side characters become nobodies after their introduction. Once their arc is complete, they have no more role in the plot. At least most of the cast in Final Fantasy 7 still have a purpose. The cast of Xenogears just tosses them aside for Bart, Citan, Elly, and Fei.

>But the 2D sprites over a 3D world was still done very wel
No, it wasn't. Xenogears looked like dogshit compared to the Breath of Fire games which also had that same approach to graphics.

it's not even a game
the creator just could get into the movie business so he made this to impress actual kids

>At least most of the cast in Final Fantasy 7 still have a purpose
lol what? Cloud, Tifa and somewhat aerith post death are the only ones who matter outside of their own arcs. Barret is irrelevant beyond his encounter with marle's dad, cait sith is worthless outside of his initial spying and getting the party out of jail later on in junon. Vincent and Yuffie are entirely optional and irrelevant to the story. Cid is airship guy who doesn't even ride it outside of his arc with shela

>17 years later they haven't learned a thing and skell combat is literally braindead
For a JRPG dev enamored with mechs, you'd think Monolith would put a little effort into making satisfying mech combat.

saga 3 wasn't so bad. The rest are a wash

>m-muh overrated
Shut up you pretentious retard.
No, your opinion is not actually worth more than anyone else's, you are not special for disliking popular things.
Get a real personality faggot.

As a psychology student, I can safely say it has a surface level understanding of Freud, Lacan, Horney, and Jung. It's like they just name dropped this giants of psychology, but purely for superficial reasons.

Just finished the Saga games for the first time and this guy's correct. Saga 3 was the only game to have decent mech combat.

Saga 1's mech combat was so bad that it was entirely optional and never once did I even look at the menu for customizing the mech.
