I never played a Final Fantasy game before but I hear how good the series is, what game should I start with?

FFXII Zodiac Age got a rerelease recently and is a good starting point
FFX HD is pretty good as well it's got a more classic turn based combat system if that's your kinda thing
FFTactics: The War of the Lions is another great one but you gotta run it on emulator also it's an SRPG spinoff

If you are fine with the ATB system, 4,6, and 9 are all great starting points

6.

7

Any as long as it isnt 6 or 13. either of those will turn you into an insufferable asshole without context

You can start with literally any of them, though 4 and afterwards are easier to get into

where did you hear that the series is mostly shit

Final Fantasy VII Remake

4-7 are all decent starting points
they're all mostly good but 8 and 12-15 are all extremely divisive

4 is the easiest classic 2D FF to get into the feel of the series.

I unironically am starting with X-2, fight me. The battle system is overwhelming, though.

Good starting options are:

Final Fantasy 4
>Introduced the combat system used for the next five games in the series, and set the tone for games focused more on story, though it's extremely cliche and cheesy.
Final Fantasy 6
>The first "modern" Final Fantasy, with slightly complex storytelling and darker themes. Set the stage for the rest of the franchise.
Final Fantasy 7
>Kind of like a sister game to FF6 in how it set the stage for the rest of the franchise.

From there, I'd recommend FF5, 9, 10 and 12 next.

The only games I wouldn't recommend starting with are 2, 3, 8, 13, or 15. 11 and 14 are MMORPGs

Bold choice. I kinda like it.

you should really play X first though

>mandatory blitzball
Nah I'm good.

Download the FF 1 gba rom. Play through that then buy FF 4 DS. A great port with auto battles which makes grinding way easier. Then just watch trailers and gameplay videos to see what you want to play next.go by what looks interesting.

>15 fps locked in the year of our lord 2011-3
>great port

Play the original versions in order starting at 1.

>people actually not saying 1 on the NES
He's never going to understand the story of the series unless he starts where it begins, retards.

This image isn't perfect, but it's alright. I'd say you could freely flip around 7, 4, and 6 in this image, they are all equally good starting points.

final fantasy is an anthology, most games have 0 connection to eachother besides a few names

What the fuck is this garbage?

Don't lie to him. Plenty of the games are connected

3rd gen 1
4th gen 4
5th gen 7
6th gen 10
7th gen 13
8th gen 15

though if you can don't start with 13 and 15 as they are departures

overall FFIV is the best game to start with as it explains what's what of all the shared lore and tropes, where other games insist you already know.

don't know what a Dragoon is, or the difference between White and Black mages, the importance of Meteor and Fat Chocobo you'll learn it in IV, IX and XIV are similar in their crash course into Final Fantasy but those two games directly reference older games so there will be some context lost

its quite literally one game that you can lose and still progress in the story.

12 is the only one worth playing. The rest are interactive movies and hall way simulators with a leveling system tacked on to make brainlets think they're actually progressing their character.

XII is good entry level because the enemies just roam there in the game world and you can go up to them and kill them or avoid them completely. The other games have random encounters and go into battle mode which is jarring as fuck.

don't do this, stay away from any and all remakes of FFIV

Fuck no it's not they don't even explain what espers are.

FFX HD the world is pretty self contained and the gameplay is fun.

IX on steam most charming one for me.

VIII if you're into edgy shit

VII if you don't mind the graphics it's actually the best of the series in terms of a modern take.

VI if you really like SNES games best story in the series.

XV if you like boring triple A shit. It's basically TLOU/Uncharted/Anthem/Destiny Tier levels of bland.

XIII if you want to kill youself

XII after you've played FFT.

To any new players interested in the FF series, please ignore these posters. They are trying to lead you astray.

>he fell for the mandatory blitzball meme
lmao, that's just if you're going for completion autism, atleast besides what said

9 is a good starting point to get a feel for the games, but the game is more of a celebration of the games up to that point. So there are gonna be references that you miss out on if you jump right into it.

you lose a lot with XII if you don't play Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story 1st, also it's the least Final Fantasyish game in the series

>shared lore and tropes from FF4

I never really thought of that, but you're right. The later games all usually borrow from the ideas that were setup in ff4. I mainly think of the importance of summoners and summon magic in FF8, 9, 10, and Meteor in FF7.

FF 9 is a good entree point. It tries to go back to the series's roots. It's not polarizing like 8 and 13 or over hyped like 7.

FF 6 is also a good choice.

XIII is shit man. It's the prime example of how to turn someone off of ff.

If you're going to play FFIV play the PSP version. The art is so fucking delicious, you wont be dissapointed.

Everything after 10 is garbage. I would probably hit 4,6,7,9, and 10 if you want to hit all the high notes. 1 and 3 are also good if you can handle old school games.

1, obviously.

>XV if you like boring triple A shit. It's basically TLOU/Uncharted/Anthem/Destiny Tier levels of bland
Say what you want, but Ardyn is one of the best things to come out of the franchise.

>FF 9 is a good entree point
no it's not a good "entree" point, it's fanservice the game. prior final fantasies are definitely reccomended before it

All of the stuff you list at the end about IV was taken from earlier games. III has all of those.

they aren't plot relevant in FF3 though. FF4 establishes plot relevancy for all of those elements that are expanded upon in later entries.

Meteor is just a powerful spell in FF3, but in FF4 it's a legendary spell that causes a character's death, and it becomes a major plot point in FF7.
Summoners also gain plot relevance in FF4 as a "special" class, which became the primary focus of FF 9 and 10.

>Joker-lite but with whiny emo bullshit

No he's not. Ignis and the boy band are the best thing to come out of that game. Through all of their blandness at least their interactions outside of the story are fun.

The versions of 3 available in English are abominations, and like 5, original 3 doesn't explain the differences between the jobs they're just there, where in 4 every thing is in context into the story

1 for dated
2 for shit
3 for nope
4 for bland
5 for deep mechanics
6 for pretending to be an oldfag
7 for soul
8 for kino
9 for comfy
10 for sissy training
11 for no one played it
12 for vagrant story single player mmo
13 for lightning
14 for boring mmo
15 for wasted potential
