I know the story and characters are awful (regardless of how desperately they tried to tie it back to 1), but how does Xenoblade 2 live up to the exploration and monster killing of the previous two games?

1 is certainly better, but if you stop comparing the game to 1, and just take it as a fun adventure it becomes much much better. The story and characters are fine, you just have to get invested. The game has flaws but that doesn't mean its worthless

I think it would be hard to make a case for Xenoblade 1 or X having better characters than 2, characters in the later game are deeper, have more development (at least 1 chapter dedicated to a party member) and has more complex and interesting villains. If you also play the DLC the comparison isn't even fair.

The world is big and beautiful, but X still is the biggest game due to being a proper open world RPG. The gameplay is by far the most varied thanks to the absurd amount of different Blades that they put in the game and that you can set to every character, also it has even more systems than X and the combat becomes very fast and dynamic in the later parts of the game and in the DLC.
I think you may be remembering something wrong, not even 1% of the entire world's surface is behind skill checks. It's the same with X.
You'll burn out after 8-10 hours.
I got more than 500 hours out of it, and I will certainly repay it in the future.
How good is X? I've got a hacked Wii u, played it for a bit but you're just kind of thrown into the fights not being told how they work so I put it off until I learn how it works. Cool mechs desu
