Parts of the American countryside really are wonderful. A lot of it is just kind of depressing, though. In a lot of rural towns there's just this feeling of decay as nobody is choosing to live in places like that anymore so you have a disproportionately large amount of old people and a lot of the buildings are in a state of disrepair.
I'm not exactly a well-traveled individual but I've gone through more than enough soon-to-be-ghost towns in the countryside.
