A studio with no passion for the project was given the reigns of a franchise which has in the past, for better and worse, focused on an experience that was more like the video game equivalent of a grounded, realistic mafia movie, and immediately changed it to be more arcade like, picked a time period not as popular in mob fiction, in a part of the country with few mob films set meaning it would be very easy for the feel of it to get off track unless they were intimate with the city itself (they weren't, so it did) , and with a character who was not a part of the mob so that the draw of a mobster fantasy wasn't there. Then on top of it all they released it as a buggy pile of ass.

The whole purpose of Mafia 3 is that youre a rival mafia instead of just a mafia, but people didnt like that for some reason

The actual gameplay was shit but it makes me upset because i genuinely liked the story and setting
