Why are Souls series and clones (Bloodborne, Nioh, Sekiro) so popular? I feel like it's this decade's COD but for tryhards.
>some of the clunkiest game mechanics since the early 90s >mediocre graphics that never stood out >more repetition than an assassin's creed game >more darkness than a DC movie or Doom 3 >story you can only get from reading journals or visiting the wiki >the leveling up system is a numbers treadmill much like Destiny or AC Odyssey
But because it's semi "hard" and punishing to casuals, tryhards will eat it all up. So why are these games so popular?
>brings back gameplay to the forefront >some level of difficulty, which hasn't been around before the trend for at least a decade >interesting lore >filters casuals git gud casul scum
Parker Lee
>why are fun games popular
Gee I don't know
Wyatt Jenkins
They're not. Not really. Nioh 2 been a success but its still rather underappreciated.
Isaiah Mitchell
Sorry it's too hard for you, maybe you should stick to playing mario and furry crossing
Mason Myers
they arent fun at all
Dylan Murphy
>all the games are just dodge simulators >muh gameplay
Hunter Evans
then play something else?
Anthony Foster
the only tryhard thing is this bait
Kevin Richardson
simply because failure is possible, which isn't the case in any other modern game unless you have sub-room temperature IQ
Nathaniel Hernandez
What do you mean by "semi hard"? Care elaborating more? Also list games you played and you consider "true hard".
Jose Davis
You're not funny.
Mason Powell
>the leveling up system is a numbers treadmill much like Destiny or AC Odyssey
Create a tank build and facetank your way to the end.
John Lee
are they? bloodborne and sekiro sold around 2-3 million worldwide. when you look at the statistics that around 30% of the playerbase actually finishes the game, which means many causals buy them out of curiosity and give up because they don't git gud.
the fanbase is simply extremely committed and keep playing them over and over and over, which is something very rare for a single player game
Jacob Wilson
As an adamant fan, I think it comes down to that feeling you get when you actually succeed at something. When I'm up against a Souls boss like Manus or Gael or OoK, I can feel my blood rushing and my heart pounding, I have the sensation of life flowing through me. Going toe-to-toe with Genichiro atop Ashina Castle, every deflection gets me more and more into the groove, and even though I die, and die I do, over and over and over, the rush that hits when you finally stick your Zweihander up Manus' ass, when your Saw Cleaver hacks off OoK's flesh, when you jam your straight sword in Gael's face and when you shove your katana through Genichiro's neck, there is no rush to compare. I personally can't play CoD, don't have the reflexes, yet these "hard' games I'll play over and over, because no matter how hard they are, it only makes the rush that much greater
Ryan Reyes
never got a rush from their games, just beat the boss and move onto the next one
Nicholas Moore
SpaceChem is hard. Dark Souls is the slow version of bing bing wahoo. Almost all other dodge simulators no matter the genre nomenclature are harder. Dark Souls is just painfully slow which makes failure more of a chore. The game is not hard, it is unforgiving. When dying, instead of taking 1/100 of a second to go back to the start of the action sequence, you have to go through a 10 second 'you die' animation followed by unoptimized reloading the level in engine followed by a stroll of one minute from the last bonfire to the first point of possible death.
Juan Martinez
The best part is none of those replies will be a solid answer.
Nathaniel Green
Don't compare Nioh to Souls, it actually has fun gameplay.
Angel Richardson
That opening sentence showed your true face. Please leave gaming forever.
this, by the end if i died to a boss i just ran by 30 monsters to try again, very annoying
Nicholas Allen
Go to bed.
Joshua Wright
fake difficulty that causes reviewers to shill them as "hard" same resaon the "roguelikes" are popular reviewers shill them despite them being buggy and unbalanced pieces of shit
play something like Metal Gear Rising or Nioh if you want good combat
Christopher Scott
>causals buy them out of curiosity and give up because they don't git gud. Or maybe because there are better games to play that aren't so anal? In any other game, this dated gameplay wouldn't fly. >narrow ledges to fall off the map >you getting staggered by regular old enemies >super dark hallways where you are the only one who can't see Seriously this is 90s gameplay made popular because muh difficulty. Would it kill them to have a grab ledge button so the game isn't filled with cheap deaths?
True hard but fair and non cheap games? Off the top of my head >Ninja Gaiden >God of War >Doom Eternal >R6 Siege (online)
Brody Brown
>>narrow ledges to fall off the map This one is bullshit but >>you getting staggered by regular old enemies No problem. Don't get cocky when you fight and you won't get punished >>super dark hallways where you are the only one who can't see Bring a torch
David Jackson
NOOOOOOOO! I need the sun, pic you posted is literally you
Nolan Collins
user is simply asking about games that are hard. Besides all games are 'puzzle' games if you aren't a brainlet and can abstract their mechanics. The genre called puzzle simply doesn't pretend to immerse you into another world. The core 'puzzle' of Dark Souls is simplistic, it is just very slow and the rare occasional mistake makes you start a 10 minutes section from scratch including 5 minutes of walking simulation. I get the feeling of working on an assembly line making basic operations but any small mistake (if only just caused by the boredom) can make me lose a lot of time.
Luis Hernandez
>any small mistake (if only just caused by the boredom) can make me lose a lot of time. this is an exaggeration and you know it. the game gives you plenty of room to fuck up and recover.
Michael Price
>just beat the boss and move onto the next one That's not how FromSoft games work.
Ethan Baker
>brings back gameplay to the forefront
The gameplay is literally just trial and error. I'm not sure why people act like the game requires any type of effort other than full on autism. The gameplay is the equivalent of Super Meat Boy. Precision and trial and error. The games have never brought anything new to the table.
Ryder Bailey
Probably because it's more common in games to make failures less likely to happen. Having a game that is trial and error is interesting compared to that.
Benjamin Gutierrez
They are fun games
Lucas Johnson
yeah, i forgot to add i had to pull some levers before facing the next boss, im sure its crucial information, yes i did play dark souls and i finished it, dont try implying otherwise
Lincoln Brown
>trial and error having the reaction time to dodge and being able to watch attack animations requires zero error
Juan Torres
>clunky >some of the most precise controls in any game ever once you learn how to use a controller its like saying a formula racer is clunky because you keep spinning out in it
