I found the whole intro to TLOU kinda desperate and annoying. The way the game hammered down just how idilic everything is, how amazing Sarah is and how perfect their relationship with Joel is was just devoid of ANY subtlety or respect for the player.
It's not a good sign when you can correctly guess exactly what the 99% of the story is going to be based entirely on genre, and the sheer desperation the developers put in to make you like someone.
To me, Sarah wasn't a character, she was a manipulative and cheap ploy of the developers.

It's funny how the story is really just 90% rip-off of Children of Men, yet they somehow have to do the same things just fucking WORSE when the original already did it fairly well. It shows how little respect Naughty Dog actually had for their audiences.
When they set up the whole dead child and trauma over failing as a father in Children of Men, they don't have to give you 20 minutes of sappy, one-dimensional flashback to sell that side of Theo. They achieve more with one photo, and two lines of dialogue than this game achieved with 10 minutes of cutscenes.

Again: TLOU had no respect for their audiences. It's ripping off better story and deliberately saying "We have to dumb it down for you guys, because gamer's are stupid".

However, the sheer desperation with which they wanted us to like Sarah does explain why it's so popular in porn.
