The way I see it is that the devil is like a revolutionary against the powers that be. In a certain way it tells that if you revolt you'll end up in hell, which is a very convenient message from the times in which the church was on the top of the hierarchy.

in dragon quest god (actually goddess) is unmistakenably a good force and the church is a completely positive institution in every way, there are some bad apple priests who go to watch whores strip in clubs or use church donations for gambling purposes in casinos but there are genuinely good guys. any other JRPG with this feel?
