i'd say suffering because getting humbled is the most life-changing experience you can endure, causes you to actually think about things. the rest would be things that would amplify the inherent nature you already have, but going through genuine agony usually changes your actual worldview

Around when you first leave Sigil, after what's his name in the sewers. That whole section in the sewers is one of the game's low points. Power through and it gets a lot better. Also, don't be ashamed if you feel the need to use the console to beat something, the gameplay in this is absolute dogtrash.

For me, everything came to place around the time I went to the undead. So if by then you're not feeling it, then it's probably just a game that's not for you.
