This is part of what I hate about the Remake. They got the characters perfectly right. Most of the redesigns are subtle and outright improvements. Their characterization is on point. The enemies of the original game are all there, even the goofier ones. The music is almost entirely made out of remixes of the OG's soundtrack.
The story, though? Haha, get fucked.
