The events in the Paper Mario games never really happened. They're not even given the courtesy of actually transpiring in some alternate universe because as shown by Paper Jam, every character that we know and love are simply fictional characters inside of a book. Paper Mario himself interacting with the bros is nothing more than a toon being given life i.e. Doodle Bob.
