that's the thing though, instead of getting stronger through arbitrary powerups strewn throughout the world, you the player get better at surviving the world. So in a since geting gud is the powerup.

Rain World and HK are nothing alike, putting the grim setting aside.
If anything it's more like an Oddworld clone but with brutal survival elements.

No, Oddworld as in it's a room-by-room platformer with a heavy emphasis on stealth and "solving" the obstacles. Just the closest game I can relate RW to.

Not really. At a first glance it looks like cinematic platformer, but it is not one. You have proper massive nonlinear world and almost zero guidance on how you are expected to explore it.

In the sense that it's a cinematic platformer in an alien world. The comparisons pretty much end there. Abe's Odyssey had a lot more puzzle elements, Rain World is about exploration and survival. Oddworld has structured challenges, Rain World has a sort of ecology system.

This game and Baba is you have definitely been some of the most interesting and unique games I feel have come out in the last 10 years. I don't think any other game off the top of my head has emulated an ecosystem as well as this game has from what I've seen.

You can't really get stuck in an area, through playing you'll quickly get a free one-time teleport that you can use in such a case
