Actually, I think that Gen 3 is where there was a shift away from the cheerful credits jingle style that Gen 1 and 2 had. Every other generation had a different scope to their music that do their own thing, but never catch the old school adventure arcadey "You are winner!" feel to the first two. The greater scope of the instrumentation probably played into this as the developers and composers now have the tools to make music more cinema-like to complement the increased technology. That said, I don't have anything against the other credits themes. Gen 2's credit theme is straight to the point and nailed it best for me personally.
