How much are PSPs going for nowadays? I was thinking about getting one

Depends how you approach it. PSPs at this point are a hobby project unless you can afford to drop a couple hundred on a pre-modded one.

All PSP batteries at this point in time don't hold their original charge. You'll need a solder in a new one or buy a modded one.

Is there any limit to what can be hacked as far as hardware/firmware?
I have a 1000, complete with janky shell, scratches, disc tray popping out, etc, but I've always wanted a 2000 or 3000 depending on which has the better screen.
Hit me with that PSP buying advice. I look forward to another 2,500 hours with Monster Hunter and Metal Gear Ac!d.

If you want to use the 1000 and you're tech savvy:

>Buy a cheap chinese psp battery off eBay ($5), steal it's battery board
>Buy 3.7V 3000mAh LiPo battery (105mm L x 50mm W x 6mm H), solder it to the battery board
>Replace the shell if you feel like it
>Buy PSP micro SD adapter, get 64+ gb sd card
>Google how to get CFW, the process is simple
>Download all the games, homebrews, software, movies, ect you want.

2000 is what you want to go for, particularly the early versions of it. It's the most moddable aside from the 1000

That's probably only for the Go, normal PSP's have removable batteries but they still have lost their original charge like you said

Nah the 1k, 2k, and 3k would be better off with a modded battery put in place. The OEM batteries are all decayed at this point. The only ones available on the market are cheap Chinese ones that lie about their true mAh capacity. Your best bet is to buy the shit ones and steal their battery board, remove the UMD drive, (and rely on a micro SD for storage, faster read times than UMD anyways) and use the empty space from the drive being gone to house the battery.

to create space for a new battery. UMD drive is useless at this point in time. You can just download all the games online via .iso files and put them on it's memory card.

i had mine for 3-4 years and loaded a bunch of roms on it. it sat for a long time and the battery became swollen but i still managed after an hour to get the battery cover on and then i sold it to a friend for a half oz of weed and some oil

i feel like the best way to go is to get an original sony branded battery that they sold when they were making the system. yeah its apparently a bitch to find and might be marked at a premium but i feel like its the smartest choice for long term use of a psp

The stick and battery broke. I just ended up buying a vita then henkaku'd it to play psp. Unfortunately the stick seems to be heading the same way again.

the sad reality is there are no good ones. the only way to get a reliable battery in is to mod it.

if you can, they are definitely more soundly constructed. however, I've always found the shape of the OEM battery boards hard to fit with a new battery.

why do you think that is? you think sony did that to make you buy theirs? because i remember back in the day seeing individual Sony branded psp batteries sold for like 20

PSP has plugin that allows you to play pretty much entire PS1 library while Vita you only stuck with eboot from PSN or game with western release since most of japanese games won't work on adrenaline

back in the day I don't think Sony was considering the modding community. their batteries just intended to be opened and repurposed. eventually when the Vita was released they just stopped manufacturing new batteries. The old gen 1 batteries swoll with age, the rest got gobbled up by enthusiasts. now the only ones available are chinese or small capacity OEM. The rest is history.
