I've played EUIII but, I've never played a Total War game before. Will I like it?
What am I in for?

it's like if paradox games had gameplay
also
>playing as oda
>vassal saito on turn 1
>later after eating tokugawa and imagawa and those irrelevant pissants I forget the name of to the west, I spend time dicking over a nasty alliance forming between the takeda and hojo who've been eating up their whole areas
>takeda declares on the saito for no reason despite our great relationship
>takeda apparently also accidentally their whole military and the saito's one stack just walks all over their land and takes it all
>now I have the penalty with everyone else for all that expansion and a way too strong vassal along all of my north borders that the game won't even let me release from vassalage to maintain relations and stop them from getting any funny ideas
is this the worst possible outcome?
Isn't that because of the realm division mechanic?
yeah, vassal territories count towards realm divide. So as far as the rest of Japan is concerned I'm a huge terrifying blobber, but in reality I'm sitting with my doomstacks bunkered in Owari and Kai and Omi waiting for the Saito to make their move
How do wars work in this game? I know that things start to fall apart if a war rages for too long in EUIII.
Diplomacy is much simpler but the AI is very crafty about using it
ps there's no concern about casus belli. Your casus belli in total war is "I want your shit"
sounds cool. It's almost done downloading.
is it true the ashigaru are the best option or is that just a big meme?
Only when you spam em in the early game. Mid-late game, they're more auxiliary for a specialized elite army in campaign.
yari ashigaru, yes. They're still spearmen, their job is to hold and be the bulk, and the ashigaru have more numbers, a better defensive ability, and like half the upkeep cost of yari samurai, a third if you're oda. And their stats aren't THAT much worse.
Total War games are nothing like Paradox games. They center on the RTS battles, so they have about a dozen less menus than EU. They also have way less provinces. You basically just build armies, develop your cities to produce more income and units and conquer shit.
if you do that in shogun 2 and try to powerblob you'll get about 8 provinces before everyone in contact with you decides it's time to band together and push your shit in. The AI is much smarter than in Paradox games (in shogun 2 at least, it stands out above the rest in AI quality)
Anyone else miss the simplicity of the original Shogun and Medieval spites?
I've had Total War Warhammer 1 and 2 since forever and never gotten around to playing them, I really should sometime
>Diplomacy
>AI is very crafty about using it
Why are you lying?
Shogun 2 is the best TW title. It's the most polished by far and the DLC is great.
should I buy all the dlc? I only have fall of the samurai
You really should. The addition of magic, flying units, and monstrous units along with factoring in things like resistances and what not makes for a somewhat different gameplay from the usual TW. It helps that all the factions play differently and are not just palette swapped copies of eachother.
Because he is a crafty AI.
Yeah I've heard they're all pretty varied. I also own all the DLC from that huge sale they had recently. Well except for the Wood Elves because fuck the wood elves
It's a good game but don't rage when realm divide hits.

>start as date
>win game
WE are underpowered at the moment due to being one of the earlier DLCs, but they can be some fun shit to play. Regardless they are a cunt of a thing to get rid of though if you are looking to take over their area.
Well unless you are playing as Skaven in which case you can fuck them up with weapon teams.
Fuck I wish CA would announce a release date for TWW3 and what the starting factions will be. I really want Ogre Kingdoms.
fall of the samurai is considered better, but rise of the samurai is interesting just because the units are so different from the base game.
There's literally no reason to get Yari Samurai over Yari Ashigaru. The Yari Ashigaru have an ability called Spear Wall, which makes them stand closer together with their pikes held forward like a phalanx. Pretty much nothing can beat that head on, and it's as good in attacking as it is defending.
As a result, there's no reason why the main part of your army shouldn't be made of Yari Ashigaru. They're cheaper than samurai and can fight pretty much anything. Put them in a line, hit spear wall, then use them as the anvil to hammer your enemy into. Support them with archers/matchlock rifles, katana samurai and cav and you're equipped to beat every situation you can encounter in the game.
With the starting Yari Ashigaru units you get, it's possible to take Kyoto on turn 0 on legendary difficulty as the Hattori. Not even turn 1, but literally before you hit the end turn button for the first time in your entire campaign. I've done it and there are videos of others doing it on YT. The advanced samurai garrison that Kyoto starts with just cannot beat the Ashigaru spear wall.
Are the Pirate Coast faction decent? They look like a ton of fun but their gameplay seems wildly different from the others
yari samurai should definitely not make up the bulk of your forces but they're still handy for putting on the flanks, they're less dependent on the general being close enough to give them head pats and tell them to keep up the good work
Leading on from this post, here are things that will fuck Yari Ashigaru up even in spear wall:
- Being attacked from behind.
- Being shot.
- Fucking Ikko Ikki Naginata Warrior Monks, which are incredibly OP anyway and basically have infinite morale.
- Depending on how widely stretched your spear wall is, some units like No Dachi Samurai or shock Cavalry in a penetrating formation can break through.
Here's a hint:
If you're defending a siege, stick your Yari Ashigaru in a spear wall just behind the wall itself. If they're on the wall they can't go into spear wall and will die the moment something climbs up, but stick them behind it and any trickle of units climbing up your rampars will come face to face with an impenetrable wall of spear tips that will fucking slaughter them. They're like a second wall of defence.
return shogun 2 while you still have the chance. Use the money on a good game like Rome: total war.
Shogun 2 was the last good historical title, user.
careful, he might be an engine purist. And I wouldn't call him wrong for being one
Wrong. That was Medieval II.
rice, rice, baby
Very good game by the way. They all got dumbed down a lot more after it
Yes they are very viable but take some getting used to. That being said that is mostly the case if you were already used to how undead worked in the base game, so coming in fresh you might be fine. They basically spam ranged units and have some monstrous stuff that can also ruin people's day. On the world map they can also build stealth settlements in enemy ports which can generate a ton of money.
Shogun 2 can be played completely without mods. Med 2 is a shitfuck without mods.
medieval 2 is awful
Wrong again.
I don't give a fuck if you lke it or not.
fuck off
Completely wrong.
Nah, if we go by 2006 standards, the last good one was Rome, not Medieval II.
Medieval II removed a shitton of features that existed in Rome. When Medieval II came out, it was already shit.
Shogun Returned the series to its former gloryhole.
>faggots going to spend another thread arguing about which total war is the best
>no u
Upset that Med2 was just a cheap RTW mod by CA? Only to be kept alive by autists who can't make mods for any other engine?
Any total war with hero units is shit
at least we know that as fact
Wrong again. Shogun 2 was trash. Shogun 2 also set the stage for the standard DLC-whoring in all newer total war games.
Well the only thing we know for certain is that it isn't 3 chinkdoms.
terrible performance for a 10-year old game
Still wrong. Will be wrong forever.
