Why does everyone hate the Source Engine?

Why does everyone hate the Source Engine?

I don't

Source is pretty clunky and outdated
Source 2 is based

Outdated as hell and bitch the work with. Allegedly even the engine maintainers themselves hate it.

It's old and janky and completely made obsolete by Unity and Unreal. Additionally, any game you make on the engine has to be sold as a mod to a Valve game whereas with Unity/Unreal you actually own what you create. Therefore, if you make a game on Source in 2k20, you are a certified cuck.

Name even one game made on Source. Go on. I'll wait.

Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines

^ This. Source engine that you're able to mod right now is .bsp based, the same format ID tech used for Doom 1 and Unreal Tournament back in the late 90's-early 2000's. Their map editor is still .bsp based, though flexible you're still having to do the same fucking tedious methods the modders in the early 2000's needed to do to optimize a map properly. Source 2 promises mesh-based (plug and play building models) and interactive terrain mapping (reminiscent to Warcraft 3 World Editor) which would BE REALLY NICE RIGHT NOW since it's almost 17 years after Source 1 first released.

It Valve really needs to get their shit together by incorporating the plug-in + visual coding systems Unreal and Unity already had for the past decade. Melee weapon tracing would be nice too (Chivalry medieval warfare melee mechanics). Modders are still waiting on Source 2 to be fully delivered. I really REALLY want to remake the Empires source mod and Dystopia in source 2.

>any game you make on the engine has to be sold as a mod to a Valve game
How is Titanfall a mod

Because it's outdated?

Half-Life 2 & Episodes
Two Counter-Strikes
Portal and Portal 2
Day of Defeat: Source
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
Sin Episodes
Insurgency
Day of Infamy
Titanfall, Titanfall 2, and Apex Legends
You've gotta get better bait, fag.

Acknowledging the bait after you give them exactly what they wanted is not a "gotcha".

lol OP are you retarded?

>hl2.exe has stopped working

The benefit of the doubt is warranted. We could also assume they were just exaggerating, like when one says "PS3 has no games".

VR doesn't count.

Source was great for the time it's just old now. I still love it though

Yes it does. VR is all that counts now.

Wasn't dark messiah made in source?

is this Natural Selection?

It just outlived its usefulness. People are tired of it. I don't know anything about 2.

not a bad engine by itself but it is outdated and new stuff is just lazily stacked on top of the old stuff

which causes a lot of older source engine games to break completely. HL2 was utterly fucked by this at one point and arguably still is in places. I still get weird memory leaks in the airboat sections

no

Why is he trapped in a bacteriaphage within a bacteriaphage?

G-Man's silhouette is powerful in this game. His hair being a little fuzzy feels a bit off to me, but other than that his design is perfect.

BSP mapping tools are better than mesh based mapping tools, I don't see why optimizations aren't done to the format to get it to run better.

He just had a military buzzcut and shampoos often

It's because nobody has been able to fully implement anything new to it. Mesh based + LOD culling has been dominating as of late in the gaming industry. Also fuck me if i ever needed to make an outdoor map in Source and not make it feel like cordoned off "outdoor rooms".

>still no sign of HL:A mapping tools
>also we'll probably not see a Source 2 SDK any time soon

Source games have a look and feel to them that can't be replicated by any other engine, so they will always have a place in my heart, no matter how clunky the engine is.

>still no sign of HL:A mapping tools
They're on SteamDB right now. They're even called the workshop tools. They were just added recently. Shut the fuck up.

It's fucking awful to work with because it's an engine from 2004, and in order to actually get something that looks good you have to go through a bunch of bullshit to do it

You continue spamming this thinking that you're talking to "oooh purty graphics" consoomers. The people who keep on asking for Source 2 and its newer tools are modders who want to make open maps without having to build each outdoor area as a rudimentary "room" with 3d skyboxes without the game digesting your ram cards.
